Bette is the perfect host. Upon arrival, we asked for guidance planning our three days in Yosemite, and she sat us down with maps, guidebooks and her family's photos to show and tell first-hand stories of what to see and what to skip (hint: no more than a drive-by of Wawona Hotel). Her recommendations allowed us to make the most of our limited time including sights we hadn't known to plan for (walk around Tenaya Lake, pack a picnic to eat at Camp Mather, pull over and get out of the car to listen to Bridalveil Falls) and how to time other sights (the exact field to be in at sunset in order to spot the El Capitan climber headlamps). In the mornings, Bette laid out a breakfast of baked eggs (prepared differently each day), fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice. There was something sweet and something savory to fuel our days of leisurely exploration. After breakfast, Bette pointed us to the Fish Camp General Store for made-to-order subs and hot soups which we packed to enjoy later. (Note: This was much more economical than eating in the park.) As for dinner, upon request, Bette will point you in the direction of great food. We enjoyed Jackalope's Bar and Grill at Tenaya Lodge (3 minute drive) and El Cid Mexican in Oakhurst (20 minutes south). On our last day, a major snowstorm was forecasted so we packed up and left in a bit of a rush to get out ahead of the storm. I'm glad we did because road closures at Tioga Pass were in effect. Perhaps because we were the only guests at the time or the last guests of the season (check-out on November 1st), but we had the upstairs to ourselves, including the Bubble Room to sleep, an adjoining room to lay out our backpacks for each day's trip, and a bathroom with double sinks, HEATED floors and separate toilet room. Unless we engaged her, Bette left us alone to enjoy the quiet accommodations of her home. Photos attached of Bette's custom family tree sculpture, her driveway and the deer that stop by in the mornings. We'd like to return to Bette's for a longer stay and more of her stories.

Bette,(and Eileen), insured that our trip to Yosemite was a wonderful experience in every way. Comfortable, roomy, clean, private, everything you’d want in a spot near the park. But the wonderful breakfasts, conversations and detailed helpful touring advice were all an unexpected plus. A charming spot in a terrific location, truly a five...
