We've stayed at Coloma Resort twice, in a travel trailer.
I'll start with the staff; from booking through check out, all the gals have been courteous, helpful and very responsive to our needs. However, you find out about customer service more so when you have an issue. We recently had reservations, and one day prior to our supposed check in, my wife became ill. I contacted the office to let them know the situation, that I didn't want to cancel, unless my wife's sickness didn't lessen the following morning (the day we'd travel and check in).
Kimberly handled my call and was a super-star about it all. I've heard and read stories about folks who have a last minute cancel, or have issues with the campsite and are treated rude by the staff of the place they're staying. Not at Coloma Resort.
I ended up cancelling our 3 day stay (I ended up getting sick, as well), and Sherry was the one who dealt with me. Just as Kimberly, Sherry was wonderful, sympathetic to our illness, ended up finding renters for our site, and issued us a credit for our rescheduled stay; all the while, maintaining a polite sincerity as if she actually cared about our personal situation.
Regarding the Resort during our prior stays; they've done a lot of remodeling, adding festivity areas, brand new restrooms, a nice public pool that was clean, etc. Their 'little' store has a lot of things on supply from clothing to food and drinks. There are no trash issues, the staff drove by on a regualar basis checking on the sites and asking if anyone needed anything. Pretty cool.
Including our two boys, there were plenty of kids and teenagers around, but all of us respected the 'curfew' hours. It was soo peaceful hearing the river at night. We, as well as other folks, were enjoying our fires in solitude.
As far as the immediate area goes; across the cool old bridge from the resort is the historic area of Coloma. All kinds of cool buildings and homes with their historical info. posted for you to read. There's a small breakfast/lunch place, a Blacksmith shop with the blacksmith's doing their thing, answering questions. There's bike and hiking paths, a small park area and restrooms in those areas are neat and clean. And, in case the Coloma Resort office doesn't have what you need, there's a small grocery store up the road about a half mile. Oh, can't forget ... Sutter's Mill is right there.
As you can probably tell, I don't do reviews. But, I felt that our recent last minute cancellation, combined with our previous stays, deserved an honorable mention.
Coloma Resort staff; thank you, thank you, thank you...for being understanding, patient and...
Read moreWe stayed here on a Fri-Sat. We arrived late, at 8 pm, and the place was PACKED with people. They claim to have reduced capacity by 25% due to COVID, but I can't see where. We only saw two vacant sites. But the group sites, bunkhouses, etc. were all occupied. We saw sites with more than the 6 person limit. And lots of groups way larger than 10 (which their paperwork prohibited). The place felt wall-to-wall with people, cars, RVs, tents.
The map staff left for us directed us down a road that had a sign stating "No RVs beyond this point". Except we had a trailer, and were in an RV site, so it boggles my mind why they would draw out that path on the map for us. Fortunately another patron came up and told us to avoid that road, as we'd get stuck, and directed us to go straight ahead.
People here were loud -- some partying loudly until 11 pm (quiet time is 10 pm), and blasting music starting at 8:30 am. We also had a lot of problems with people cutting through our campsite, even sneaking around the back of our trailer and popping out by surprise in front of my husband.
Pretty much nobody was wearing masks. Not even the staff, despite the paperwork saying it was required for them. Outside of us, we only saw two staff and two guests ever wearing masks.
We stayed in site 18, which was cozy, but fit our 23ft trailer fine. However they were so cozy that our sewer connection was right in the sitting area of the next site over. Poor guy had his chair next to our sewer hose.
The river was nice, and scenic (worth a star bump). But crowded. The pool was also nice, but again very crowded.
Trash was overflowing at the receptacles as well. They clearly don't have enough bin space for how many people they cram in there.
The road getting there (49) is narrow and winding. We managed fine with our trailer (though it took extra focus). But the guy next to us in a fifth wheel said the drive on 49 was really rough. He actually ended up not being happy with his stay either, and left a day early.
This place has a ton of rules, in tiny print on the backside of the check-in map. Which is fine -- we like rules, and places that enforce them to keep things pleasant. Except we saw zero enforcement. And lots of rule breaking. The only time we saw an employee enforce anything, it was to yell at a toddler for riding a Power Wheel.
This place might be your jam if you're into a lively, crowded, party atmosphere. If you like more quiet, chill campgrounds, or if you are concerned about recreating responsibly and safely during the pandemic, this is...

We stayed in one of the riverfront spots and while the RV space was on the small side (site sizes vary so be sure to know what you're getting as map is not to scale) it was PERFECT! The sound of the river and the amazing beauty of the American River... PRICELESS! We were here in October so it wasn't too hot and the shade provided a great shield from the afternoon sun.
The grounds... PRISTINE! Now... this wasn't during their Summer busy season but most of the spots were full. The site was immaculate when we arrived. Freshly raked, cleaned fire pit, PERFECT location (we were in site #67). The place is pet-friendly so we did hear and see lots of dogs but their owners were considerate. No complaints there. The bathrooms and showers were IMMACULATE! No peeling paint or rusty fixtures. Everything was in great working order and EXTREMELY clean! What a treat. We have a shower in our trailer but I opted for the ones at the site instead. Large dressing areas and curtained off for privacy. I could not have asked for better. And we poked our head into the other showers/restrooms throughout the grounds and they were equally as clean. EVERYTHING was so well-maintained.
There's a pool and playground equipment for the kids. The general store is lovely and they have all the incidentals you may need during your trip. There's LOTS of water access and there are many places nearby to rent kayaks and other water-recreation equipment.
The staff... our experience was PHENOMENAL... from the reservation process to the checkout process and everything in between. Someone escorted us down to our site since we were first-timers. When we had questions or needed information, the women in the general store/office were extremely helpful. We had lots of questions about rebooking and they took lots of time with us to explain their booking process and check site availability for us. (We rebooked for 3 trips next year... it was THAT great). The staff made sure to enforce quiet hours (after 10 PM) so if you're looking for a place to party late into the night... this is NOT the place for you :)
Everything about this place was fantastic. I can't speak for the summers because I'm sure it's HOT and probably very busy but I can see why. It is now our favorite go-to spot. We live in the Sacramento area so it took less than 45 minutes to get there. We are already looking forward to the next trip.
I highly...
