Our group spent the Memorial Day holiday (Saturday through Wednesday) at Houghtons North Sky Resort.
The grounds are fantastic. Nice little beach, the cottages were very clean and had everything that we needed, nice dock area, great fire pit, and a nice fish cleaning hut. Not much else we could have asked for.
Our group was here for fishing. The fishing was a little slow at times, but we still caught 17 walleye (of which only one was below 15 inches) and several Northern Pike (all but one over 20 inches, with a max of 26 inches, with one monster lost at the boat). Fish are not hard to find, but we had some unfortunate heavy winds that presented a challenge (more than just a Walleye chop). We had a good walleye meal and still brought some home.
We only caught two bass, but they were 15.5" and 18". We also caught some good Rock Bass and Perch, so we were never not catching fish. Always some action.
The town is a combination of family fun and fishing community. There is a Walmart and Home Depot nearby, but it doesn't feel like a big town. There are plenty of mom and pop places that make the small town feel. Plenty of bait shops and boat supply stores too. We got bait from Lymans and rented boats from Be Water Rentals. Both were great.
A quick note on Be Water...there was an issue with one of our boats that we rented from them that was not their fault. They called us to keep us updated, worked hard to resolve the issue before we got there, and made sure to keep us informed about who was available in case we needed assistance during each day. A Plus.
Lastly, a big thank you to Nicki and Chuck (the owners). They were attentive to our needs (without being overbearing) and very friendly. They did a great job of providing a great fishing vacation experience for us, but I'm sure that if you go for a family trip that would be just as...
Read moreWe stayed at Houghton North Sky as a weekend getaway, just my Hubby and I. Cottage number 5 was absolutely perfect for us. We were right on the water and had plenty of room. The accommodations were perfect. The cabin had everything we could have needed and more. You literally only need to bring your clothes to survive your stay. The area is welcoming, relaxing and would be amazing for a family vacation. Our neighbors were kind enough to let us peek in their cabin #3 that had 3 bedrooms and sleeps 8. I can not wait to go back and rent several of the cabins out to have a big family vacation. Nikki was very sweet and took excellent care of us during our stay. The amazing gift shop that she runs was adorable and was great for buying souvenirs and gifts to bring home. There is literally nothing bad about this location and everything it has to offer. We can’t wait to get back there soon. Thank you Nikki for...
Read moreWe were here right after Christmas (and right after the blizzard!) and perhaps the first guests for the ice fishing/snowmobiling season. We truly enjoyed this cute and beautiful cabin, and more, Chuck and Nicki’s hospitality! Nicki kept updating us about the ice & snow conditions before we arrive. Chuck gave us a warm welcome by starting the bonfire right by the lake. We really loved how everything in this cabin is by design and very aesthetically pleasing - from the color of the walls to the handcrafted signs to the intricate table covers. The Christmas lights made the cabin look so cozy from the outside & even the stairs down to the lake are decorated with lovely blue lights. Our daughter took numerous pictures. We had fun hiking on the thick ice on the lake, ice-fishing, and caught first big fishes of the season. The gift shop is just adorable. Thank you ... we enjoyed your cabin so much and will...
