I have stayed at least five hotels and five bed and breakfasts or airbnbs in saugatuck. Best Western is definitely the best place to stay in saugatuck. It's clean. The staff are great. The place is perfect condition. There's a pool and a hot tub. I've stayed many other places with no pools or anything indoor or out. This is indoor and great for off-season or high season.
After dinner I was hopeful to have a cup of coffee but all of the coffee shops were closed. Guess what. Best Western provides coffee all day long and free breakfast in the morning. It can be a challenge getting up at 5:00 in the morning and finding a cup of coffee sometimes or leaving the family to go find some coffee. This is never a concern at the Best Western in saugatuck. Breakfast is included and coffee is available all the time.
After 10 years of trying every hotel or Airbnb in the area that is less than $200 a night, I have to admit the best Western is the best stay in saugatuck. The condition of the building is perfect. There's not one chip in the paint that I could find. The beds are lovely and comfortable. The TV is easy to work. This isn't always the case at other places. At Best Western heat is strong and easy to operate. In other places I've almost broken the thermostat because it didn't make any sense how it worked. At BW, there are no mysteries or puzzles. Everything works and is easy to use. I never had one moment of stress.
Best Western has a coin washer and dryer which can come in very handy. There have been times I've had to use the public laundromat which to be honest is a little bit overpriced for a public laundromat. At BW There's an iron and an ironing board at the Best Western as well as soap and shampoo. Staying in other hotels or airbnbs these amenities simply were not available.
It's not in the center of town but it is certainly close enough to ride a bicycle to the heart of saugatuck and the Kalamazoo River. And the interurban will pick you up and drop you off for 1$ dollar if you don't want to drive 2 minutes to town and park.
The Best Western is also one of the best prices available, especially in the offseason. In all honesty the price, the amenities, the staff, and the comfort level has been supreme at the Best Western especially in comparison to many other lodging options in saugatuck. Remember a pool a hot tub...
Read moreMaybe I've just been watching too much Stranger Things, but this "hotel" was flat-out creepy. First of all, when I walked in, nobody was at the front desk and I had to wait quite a few minutes before somebody came. Their rooms are down one hallway on the top and bottom floors. It wasn't even that late or anything it was only about six o'clock. There aren't any elevators either so if you are handicapped make sure you get a downstairs room. After leaving my luggage in my small and freezing room, I went down the stairs to the pool and fitness area. The "gym" is a small space about the size of my closet with fitness machines in it. The pool is impossible to swim in because the deepest part of it is only four feet deep. The hot tub was also immensely hot and hard to stay in for more than two minutes. The pool area was terribly lit and I had to wander around it finding various light switches to actually see what I am doing. After I finished swimming, I went back to my upstairs room. The TV and WiFi was probably the only good thing about this hotel. After failing to heat up my tea because the microwave refused to work, I went downstairs to try and find a vending machine. They had both a Pepsi and Coke machine in addition to a snack machine. I got a semi cold sprite from the Coke machine and was planning on getting some pretzels from the snack machine until I realized that a dollar bill was shoved into the dollar slot and wouldn't budge. I went around the corner to the front desk to ask about that but, as expected from this crappy hotel, nobody was at the front desk. I decided to call it a night so after watching some Netflix with their WiFi I went to bed. In the morning, I went to their "breakfast" which was quite disappointing. A few random people were there but not many. They had a few cereal dispensers but they were almost empty. Obviously, this place did not have a kitchen, so all the food was thawed out. I overheard one man near me ask for a decaf coffee to, who I assume was, the managers wife. So, she disappeared into the back room and didn't come back out. For $80 a night that kind of experience was to be expected, however, I think anybody that can afford it should invest in a different hotel because, ultimately, you get what...
Read moreI booked two rooms for an event over two months in advance. The week before, some people changed their plans, so I had to cancel one of the rooms. When I called the hotel, they said they had forgotten to take down mg credit card information initially, so both rooms had already been canceled. After a good half hour on the phone, they managed to get a reservation set back up for one of the rooms. Because they were treating this as a new reservation, I was concerned that the price might change, but the person I spoke with conformed it was the same price. As soon as I told him that I got the new confirmation email, he said "okay bye" and hung up on me. I checked the confirmation, and of course the price had gone up by $50, despite his assurances that the price wouldn't change. Given his manner of "helping" over the phone, I decided this would be easier to fix in person. When I checked in to the hotel, the person at the desk printed out the usual agreement to sign, and it had the incorrect amount. I showed him my printout of the original confirmation at the correct price, and he scribbled out and wrote in the correct price on the agreement. I would have expected him to change it in the system and reprint it... Upon getting to my hotel room, I thought I saw a dead cockroach in the corner. It turned out to be a live cricket, which I escorted outside. At checkout, I had to wait about 20 minutes while the two people at the front desk tried to figure out how to reimburse a lady whose credit card they had charged twice. Once they finally got that resolved, they tried to print me a copy of my receipt (they seemed surprised that one hadn't been slid under my door overnight), and it took ten minutes for the printer to finally work. Fortunately, the price on the final receipt was correct. The only reason I'm not giving them one star is because the continental breakfast was...
