Stayed at this adorable motel last weekend for a bachelorette party. The motel itself is updated, clean and much more than you’d expect for a roadside motel. There is a large outdoor pool with a hot tub and large seating area. As well as several fire pits and pavilions for all to use. They sell firewood, fire starter & lighter fluid in the office. We had a nice fire our first night there. The breakfast is simple with bagels, danish, muffins and other carbs/breads. No fruit or yogurt, eggs, etc. there is coffee and a fridge full of juices. The in room fridge kept our things cold and there was plenty of room for four women and all of our stuff.||Now onto the not so great parts. When we checked in the owner, Walt, was quite chatty and full of the dad jokes. At first it was endearing but it got old pretty quickly. Our first full day there we decided to hang at the pool. We knew the rules of no food/glass. We were there with a large group and apparently one of the ladies missed the no glass rule and had her wine bottle next to the pool. Walt came storming in hot SCREAMING at us like we were children. “Who is the rule breaker?! I told you no glass now get it out of here now! Right now! Why aren’t you getting up?” For the rest of our stay we all felt quite uneasy. I understand we broke a rule, but this was a group of 30-40 year olds and we were scolded like children. For the rest of the weekend, Walt was everywhere. Constantly sitting outside. Watching. Then trying to make small talk and I would walk out of my way to not have to engage. He definitely put a damper on things and we were “afraid” to do anything that might get us screamed at again. ||All in all I’d say if you don’t intend on hanging around there, it’s a great, clean place to stay and they do provide a breakfast. But if you are going to stay and use the amenities, be prepared to be hounded by the owner and forced to listen to his awful, constant jokes. I even witnessed him cold scold a 50 something woman for moving her chair six inches out of its place so she could be closer to her friends. It was very odd and like nothing I’ve ever experienced as a grown...
Read moreMy lab-son Sniper and I had a wonderful overnight get-away at Starlite Resort in Saugatuck! It is just a short drive to downtown and other places of interest. We even went to the Saugatuck Dunes State Park with 2 and 1/2 miles of beautiful, remote, natural shoreline that allows dogs.
My reason for planning our stay here is because they are very dog family friendly and this was my first time to take Sniper on an overnight trip. There was a family next to us with a Golden Retriever and three others I met gathered together on the lawn with their beautiful English Labs and a Retriever. All of us with well-behaved dog families on one end of the motel, respectful of the property and other guests without animals.
The grounds are like a really well maintained park with plenty of grass, trees and shade. There are new gazebos with tables under in case it rains, new grills, Adirondack chairs set around several bon fire pits perfect for family and friends to gather, a heated pool with a hot tub which looked great but I didn’t try out.
We stayed in #17 at the end of the motel in a nice, clean remodeled room with one bed so there was plenty of room to walk around. The bathroom was big and had a lovely shower.
The breakfast room was clean and charming. The self-serve area had coffee, milk, juices, and packaged cereals, bagels and danish which I took back to my room after exchanging greetings with other friendly guests.
I highly recommend Starlite Resort and want to thank the owners for taking such pride in preserving a neat retro motel...
Read moreI made reservations at least a month in advance and they knew me well as I had to call a couple different times to make adjustments and ask questions. I also posted on their social media. They absolutely knew was having a mini family reunion! Well when we arrived to find all of our rooms were separate and one was across The lot,We were a little disappointed with that. However,It is what it is and sometimes things just cannot happen how you think that they were going to so we let it go. Then the man who we later found out was the owner, drove by us and stopped and said hey, your cluttering up my sidewalk! I explained we are trying to get moved in for our4 day stay! Then again later that evening, the man walks up to my sister who was at the propane grill and says, "Busted!" and goes on to question her about the use of the grill they had there for guests to use! Then again at the firepit, we were asked to make sure we clean up. Well of course we're going to clean up any mess we make! The point us, I told them each time I called that this was a family reunion and the reason we chose them was for the firepit! Evidently Sarah in the office, (not the wife) didnt let anyone know everything or anything I had told her and the owner is unable to not micro-manage his guests! The staff and the owners wife were all great! The owner himself turned out to be a very nice man but it was a rough start with him. I would definitely stay there if I was on a road trip and needed a room for 1 night but another reunion? I think I would look...
