I usually don’t write reviews , but felt needed too on this Black Beach Inn Grand Stay in Silver Bay Was Leary of booking this one for three nights over 4rth July holiday because of a lot of Not good reviews. Glad I did fior many reasons , just my hubby and I in our 60’s. Hotel all areas and room very clean, no wait to check in , had room first floor with awesome little patio facing east towards Lake Superior. View not as good cuz of trees , 2nd n 3rd floors be great view. Enjoyed patio every morning sunrise, hearing the Loons , glass looking water Freshly mowed grass, 2 grills. Fire pit, chairs picnic tables and wood provided. Great, especially if have children can play right outside door in a yard Not many hotels have all this. Very nice pool area, big slide, toddler slide, hot tub, pool table , restrooms, towels… perfect Breakfast area very clean, good tasting cheese omelette, sausage, waffles and all the other usual. By 3rd morning was hoping for different hot items, like biscuits and gravy ! But all good. Coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate mix available 24 hours. Worker always cleaning this and lobby. Miniature golf outside, frozen pizza they can cook for you, nice feature as well. Not slit eating options in Silver Bay, and they close early as well as Beaver Bay. Not an issue for us as we were traveling up and down beautiful HWY 61, North Shore Road , and are other places Enjoyed all the beautiful stops. Have an app like thing found online that shows you by miles, what attractions, towns coming up. Every 1 mile on highway are green marker Mile signs. Really nice look at phone and mile markers for stops Hotel had golf cart shuttle to Black Besch and to town. Did not use but another nice amenity All hotels seem expensive, this area from Duluth to Other end hiway, 154 miles, This was midrange priced one. I learned that cannot really judge by reviews. This place with all listed they had was awesome!! More so if have children Glad I chose...

I will admit we booked last minute and this was the only place in the area that could accommodate family size. I guess having openings last minute should have been a clue. The beds were so hard and uncomfortable. Bring your own pillows. The room was dusty when we arrived and their were food wrappers under and around the bunk beds. The a/c unit was in the far bedroom and not anything in the other so the other bedroom was so hot and stuffy. We had to blast really cold air to keep the other bedroom a reasonable temp but we frozen in the “main” bedroom. There is no where to hang anything in terms of towels or bathing suits. There is one hook on the bathroom door. Yes, there is a closet but do you really want me to hang dripping towels and bathing suits over carpet? Also our door didn’t shut properly. You had to slam it shut to click and lock. I’m assuming the other doors are like that because you can hear all the doors being hard slammed…even late at night. Oh the hot tub had so much chlorine in it our eyes were burning. Pool was nice except we didn’t know who the pool attendant was and the front seemed annoyed when we asked about the slide. How were we suppose to know the person sitting two tables from the slide entrance on his phone was the attendant? We’re we supposed to walk up to every person there and bother them? For a 2 star hotel it is wildly overpriced, but I guess they are cashing in on the location/season. The front desk seemed to not want to be there. And when we checked out we were not even asked how our stay was. Just if we got our email receipt and if we wanted...

The room was dirty, sticky wrappers from previous people stuck to the side of the chair in living area. Crumbs all over the pull out bed (which also didnt have a mattress cover on or pillow cases on the pillows. The sink area had a Bobby pin on it so clearly not cleaned. Shower had dirt on the floor of it and also did not drain when showering. There was a used a towel hanging in the closet. Table out in balcony was full of bird poop.overflow drain on whirlpool in room was caked with scum…ick. The toilet paper area wall had two different colored smears on it(which I washed myself with cleaner and it went away…ick again!)Their pool area staff was not watching anyone and on their phone constantly not monitoring swimmers, and shut off the pool slide while my kids were on it(kids asked to turn it back on and he did with zero explaining why it was turned off). The pool water was “fizzing” I assume to unbalanced chemicals and our eyes were burning shortly after entering. Lady at front desk was helpful at getting what we needed that we were shorthanded in the rooms but will not be going back here next time! We were at this same hotel years ago and it was great so went again but after this trip, no thanks. Slacking in their hygiene department! I have photos if interested. Definitely or worth the price or...

This place is probably a 4.5 by I’m giving a 5 because: A) You can’t give a 4.5 B) The staff went out of their at to make sure we enjoyed our stay Some things that impressed me: * Indoor pool/play place. We didn’t use it but it was huge, clean, well maintained, and full of families having fun. * Quiet. There were many families there but the hotel was very quiet. Walls seemed well-constructed. Halls were attractive and bright. * Location and grounds. Nicely landscaped and convenient access (right off 61 just minutes from Tettegouche, Palisade Head, Split Rock, etc. A grocery store, fuel, and restaurants are available 2-miles south in Silver Bay. Tip: if you like to walk and see beautiful places, Black Beach is just an easy 1-mile walk down the quiet dirt road behind the hotel. Go past the “first” black beach and check out the 2nd more sand-like truly black beach at the end of the dirt road. Very cool! * Breakfast. Tasty waffles and assortment of standard hotel continental breakfast items. Area was kept clean and stocked. Our room was clean and comfortable. Only complaints: hot water wasn’t so hot, shade for door window to patio wasn’t room darkening, and TV was quite small and limited. Otherwise, very nice. We would definitely stay here again.

Our stay was a bit rocky at first, the young teenage boy watching the pool was extremely rude. Their big slide has a height restriction of 48 inches which we didn't know prior to booking so neither of my kids got to go on it and were very disappointed. He wouldn't even let my daughter go when she was like an inch or 2 too short. Got to the room it was pretty standard but had some trouble with the TV the lady at the front came in to fix it though. We stayed the Saturday before Easter in the morning they had a very good breakfast as well as pictures with the Easter bunny and an egg hunt which was a nice surprise. We went swimming again and the gal watching the pool Easter Sunday was much nicer she let my daughter go down and let My 4 year old son go down at least once. There isn't much around for food or stores in the area but it is in close proximity to black beach and split rock lighthouse etc which was really cool to see. All in all not a bad place to stay just be weary of the height restriction if you have kids
