Black Beach Campground is the perfect spot to be located when venturing up and down the coast from Silver Bay. I couldn't get the history on this campground to know when it opened, but on Google Earth Maps as of July 2024, the earth view does not show anything here but vacate land. Given that, I'm assuming this place is relatively new. The campground is situated on 14.5 acres with 49 sites. 34 sites have full hookups with 20/30/50 service. 15 sites are electric only with 20/30 amp service. If you don't get a full hook up site, you will need to go into town to dump. There is currently no dump station here. The place is very clean. They are strict on checkout time of noontime and checkin not before 2:00 p.m. This allows the staff two hours to prep the sites for incoming guests. Given that this place is new, it is rather sparse, in that no mature trees or shade on the grounds. But trees have been planted. Each site has a fire ring/grill top and picnic table. The campground has two sections. One near Hwy 61 and the other one further back nearer Black Beach. Traffic noise is not bad. Traffic on the street is not bad. There is a playground set for the kids. Silver Bay Shuttle service has a pickup up spot in the campground to take you to various places near the campground. The campground is owned and operated by the city of Silver Bay.

The information on the website did not prepare us for what we saw when we arrived. We had reservations for 2 nights. You didn't get to see the actual view of the campsites, just a map. We had reserved an end site and when we got there, it was right near the highway and under the lighted campground sign. The sites were close together and absolutely no trees. You got pit toilets instead of flush toilets. I'm guessing the toilets and showers were close to the beach area. There was no one in the campground. It was noisy and we decided we would not stay there. Even though we had already paid for 2 nights, we left anyway. We went down the road to a state park campground and paid almost half what they charge here, and the sites were huge and shaded. We would not recommend this campground unless you don't care about noise and no trees, and people go back and forth down the dirt road to the beach.

This was a decent campground. We made reservations about two weeks in advance for a Sunday and Monday night. I don’t really think it’s fair to pay extra to make sure you get the site you already registered for. That doesn’t make any sense to me. No other park that I know of does that. We were in the new loop by the lake. It was pretty quiet, but won’t be shaded for years to come. It’s so new. I think they should have gone ahead and put showers in this loop too since they already have water and sewer. The vault bathrooms really need lighting inside of them. There is a security light not 25 feet from the building, why they didn’t install lights is odd to me? Maybe it’s in the plans? The spaces were very spacious and well maintained. The bathrooms in our section were very well kept. Even though it turned out to be about $50 per night, I think I would stay here again.

I was there July of 2020, which was about a month after it had opened and loved my experience there. The bathrooms were spotless which is important to me because I camp with a tent. The campground is also centrally located on the north shore with Duluth, Grand Marais and Ely all being about an hour away plus quite a few state parks being within that hour drive.

I just returned from my July of 2021 trip to the campground. The trip was 5 nights. The campground was clean with the exception of the bathrooms. They have teenagers responsible for cleaning and it shows. I used the shower house every day. I went in more than once to find no toilet paper in one of the two bathrooms with a flush toilet. The showers left a lot to be desired and it was very obvious that they were going more than 24 hours between cleanings even though the teenagers were there every day and supposed to be cleaning. I went in one and there was a like a 5 inch sized hair ball in the shower and when I went back the next day (about 25 hours later) the hair ball was still there. The vault toilet in the loop closer to the lake was clean but the hand sanitizer dispenser was empty. Not a big deal because I bring my own anyways but still should have been refilled.

I did mention this issue to the campground host who works the office, which is open for 5 hours in the early afternoon. She was very apologetic and took it upon herself to immediately go and check the bathrooms and I saw her go get cleaning supplies before I had even driven away from the office even though she stated the teenager cleaning had just been there to clean the bathrooms.

Overall I would recommend this campground because of the location and I would return but I would be cautious of the...

The campground is fine. Convenient, wide open with no tree cover. Black Beach is very close. HOWEVER, the lady that works in the office is on a serious power trip. She was beyond rude, condescending, and reallllly made us feel like she was doing us a favor with every interaction. If this was my business, I would be mortified to have her representing it. My parents arrived just after noon, after checking the website and seeing that noon is the checkout time, but no check in time listed. They have been camping for 40+ years, and are the kindest, most respectful people ever. They pulled into their site and were unhooking their Jeep to head back up to the office when the lady rolled up and asked them “What do you think you’re doing?” They responded that this was their site, and they were just checking in. She asked if they planned to pay the early check in fee, and when they were surprised and asked for check in time, she admitted they don’t have one. She then told them they were responsible for letting us know all of the rules when we arrived, since she was letting them check in early. She was beyond condescending. Later, when my daughter went up to the shower house and accidentally walked into the office (which is in the front of the building under the sign “Office and Shower House,” she belittled a TEN YEAR OLD and said, “does this look like a shower house? Where do you think a shower house would be? Are you even staying here? Do you know the code?” ||Needless to say, we will not be back. We did not feel even a little...

The staff is extremely rude and unfriendly. I went online to add an extra day to our stay and when i received confirmation it was for a different weekend. I canceled right away(within seconds) and called twice with no answer(left a message). Mind you I have called this campsite numerous times over the months with no answer or call back. I sent an email right away and finally a gentleman called me later that day. They continued to tell me it was my fault and they have nothing to do with it. Then said he could switch sites which i agreed was great. Then he told me he was going to charge me another $44 dollars and that the $44 I spent on the incorrect weekend wouldn't be credited to another reservation (as stated on their website) cause he didn't know how to change it. After trying to explain to him i was not paying more money he got extremely irritated and said that switching the site was no longer an option and he didn't have time for me. I asked to speak with the manager in which he wouldn't give me a contact number and pretty much hung up. I sent an email stating i would like a refund for the entire weekend as I no longer feel this campsite is a safe option for myself and children as many reviews on this camp ground talk about how rude and disrespectful they are. They confirmed those reviews without even showing up. I still have not received an email about a refund or have gotten in contact...
