Very disappointed with my experience. A standard room here on the 4th of July weekend cost me $550+, so I hoped for a really good hotel. You pay this price in New York City, you'd easily be able to get a room in a 4-star hotel to say the least. Anyhow, here's my list of disappointments: The room is TINY, and the bed inside is merely a full size bed, not even a queen size bed which is mostly standard across all hotels! Not what you expect if you're paying $550 for a night! Pay $550 in NYC and you'd be at a way better hotel with lot more amenities. (For a frame of reference, Courtyard Marriott in Hell's Kitchen- Manhattan costs $280 for the same night. Way better rooms, way better amenities, almost incomparable honestly. And that's just a 3-star hotel! For almost double the price, am I so wrong to expect at least that level of room and amenities? What in the name of god have I even paid for here?!) They have probably the oldest infrastructure in the room. The TV is probably 20 years old, and there's about 5 channels on it, and hey, you can't cast to this TV because guess what, it's that old! The Wifi wasn't working when we got here. I'm writing this review using my mobile data because it's been over an hour since I checked in and yet, no WiFi. Also, not too good cellular network on Fire Island so you have to rely on Wifi which is sort of a basic necessity here, and even that wasn't working.
The staff are kind and good people, but at the end of the day, I paid $550 for a room, and I got a really really bad room. Now I'm not aware how good/bad other rooms are, but I can't imagine them being too much better. And they definitely won't be worth the possible $600+ prices that'll be quoted by the hotel. I simply cannot comprehend why this property is so expensive when it has NOTHING to offer! Highly disappointed and probably never coming back here or recommending this place to anyone!
FINAL WORD: Avoid this place at all costs! Anywhere else I wouldn't pay a dime more than $100 for a room like this, and $100 is also pushing it! (I'm a consultant, I travel for work all the time, so I've been to quite many hotels to say the least. This by far is one of the WORST hotel rooms I'll probably...
Read moreOverall, the hotel did not meet my nor my boyfriend's expectations, especially given the price point and the ratings we saw previous to booking. I usually would not leave a review, but I genuinely did not think some parts of our experience were okay.
For starters, the floor was not clean when we arrived. While slippers were recommended- that should be, perhaps, because hardwood floors can be cold NOT because the floors might not be cleaned properly such that sand and little particles will stick to my feet while I walked around the room for the first time.
Additionally, on our last night, we discovered that we had no hot water. My boyfriend and I were exhausted and cold after a late night at the beach, and it was frustrating to have to deal with a lack of hot water. But of course, things can happen at no fault of the hotel. Thus, what really solidified our rating and opinion of the hotel was the lack of service and care from the hotel. We called the after hours number as suggested twice, and we were directed to voicemail both times. I left a voicemail and no one called back, not even the next day when normal office hours resumed. When we checked out, the staff didn't ask about our stay or for feedback signaling to us a lack of care to acknowledge any issues or desire to remedy issues that may have arisen for their guests.
My boyfriend and I were truly disappointed at the lack of customer service and overall quality. While we may revisit the location as the neighborhood is cute and super friendly, we would not stay at this hotel again nor recommend...
Read moreThe Cherry Grove Beach Hotel is perhaps the only lodging in Cherry Grove you can book on the Internet. The daily or weekly lodging options on Fire Island are very limited. If you have tons of money, there are Fabulous Homes that can be rented in Cherry Grove or Fire Island Pines, weekly, monthly or for the season. But you will easily pay $20,000+ a month for luxury. For the season, it is possible to get a very small space for under $20,000. Don't be surprised by rentals for $60,000 and UP for the season. But if you are looking for a few days, the Cherry Grove Beach Hotel is your best bet [and it has a great pool]. Daily rates for VERY simple rooms run as low as $80 for an early or late season weekday. The same room will cost almost $400 for a major weekend holiday. You are not going to Fire Island for the lovely rooms unless you are renting for the season. A weekday getaway can be very affordable and delightful. Go for the incredible beauty of the beaches and the location and the isolation and for the sense of Gay History. Making friends is easy. There are no cars, not even bicycles. Only narrow boardwalks where everyone says hello when passing. Try the Grove Hotel and enjoy its simplicity. No phone, no TV (unless you opt for a "deluxe" room). The relaxation begins with the 20 minute ferry ride. Let that set the tone. Relax. Let your hair down. Talk with strangers [unheard of in NYC!] And never mind that your room will be more simple, cramped and plain than the dullest Motel 8. You're on Fire Island....
