I’m sure the owners of the Station Inn mean well, and it’s the only option in Pawling, but consider it a motel, and then you won’t be disappointed. I stayed there over Christmas with several family members in other rooms. They had similar comments. The room was freezing, even with my wall heater (which buzzed all night) set to 86 degrees. Only lukewarm air came out, and the storm windows were ineffective. Perhaps the hotel is a better option in the summer. There is coffee, tea, and cookies in the shared hallways, but this means you wake up with the first person who partakes (particularly if there are two people chatting), as the walls, floors, and doors are paper-thin. And be sure to get there early while mugs are still available. The room was clean, except for marks on the carpet around the sink (old toothpaste?), which was located in the room rather than in the bathroom. My bed was fine, but others in our party had mattresses with noticeable indentations. And it IS a station inn. The tracks are just yards away, with trains passing through all night (the hotel provides earplugs). Thankfully, I brought a sleeping mask because the blinds do nothing to block out the...
Read moreWell. We had a lovely room in the third floor walk-up. It is a spacious, spotless remodeled attic on the third floor. We only found the great space after we had waited on the porch for 30+ minutes because the hotel door lock are enigmatic. This is a ghost hotel. There is no check in. Access to the rooms require deciphering a front door lock which is difficult. While we lingered on the front porch getting progressively frustrated with the 30+ minute call back after our long car trip, two very helpful young ladies aided us in front door passage. They also allowed that they also had difficulty with the door locks. The location is excellent in the middle of Pawling with easy restaurant access. The front porch is also about 40 yards from the train tracks. In the evening there were 5-6 trains alerting with their whistle to their passage. In the morning the timely 5:58 AM train alerted us to our 6:00 AM alarm. Other than the lock puzzle, third floor walk-up with ghost hotel and timely train thunder, the room was excellent with abundant coffee on the second floor. Even if one is allergic the fresh flowers...
Read moreWe stayed at the Station Inn while visiting Daryl’s House for a concert. The inn is right in the heart of downtown Pawling, easily missed because it’s tucked in on a hill. From the lawn and the patio furniture, it welcomes you warmly. Our host was very communicative by email, and one phone call, and took steps to make sure it went smooth. It was flawless and seamless all the way through. We had a king, downstairs # 13 which has a cute little patio outback, nice French doors. The rooms (we had two), and another guest upstairs, were very clean, detailed. Pretty much basic, nice flatscreen, Netflix on demand, coffee in the hallway, giant baths, all modern touches.
Centered in town, next to the rail. Yes we heard a few trains, but remember you are in a quaint place, a pretty one at that, and you are open to new experiences. It added to the charm.
Sheets towels and pillows all bright white and crisp clean. The effort that was put into maintaining this Inn is huge and thoughtful. We will definitely return to enjoy more of what Pawling has to offer.
