Nice, historic mansion and side buildings near the Mississippi, located just south of the historic center of Vicksburg. The area adjacent to this property appears run down and in need of renovation. The mansion itself is on the National Historic Registry and is impressive, but in bad need of restoration and repair. The grounds are adequately maintained. They apparently are recently under new ownership.
Our stay there coincided with a group reunion. I paid full price for a "Riverview Suite" which turned out to be uphill and further away from the river than the main building, and offered only a very limited glimpse of the Mississippi from the front balcony that doubles as a walkway for access to the other rooms on the top floor of that building. The bedroom was towards the back and was at street level. Fortunately the noise from passing traffic wasn't too bad. The room was furnished in southern Victorian or Antebellum style. Unfortunately the lights in the front sitting and dining room did not work so we never used that part of our suite. There was also a small kitchenette that included a standard coffee maker that we didn't use. The suite includes a jacuzzi style tub (also not used) and a separate walk-in shower. After using the shower we noticed the carpet on the bedroom side of the wall appeared wet.
There were two ways to access the main building, either down a rocky slope/driveway or though a wooden passageway and spiral staircase connecting the Riverview building to the main building grounds. We only tried the wooden passageway once at night as it was unlit and the wood wasn't well maintained and felt rickety. We managed to light our way through the darkness using our cellphones. Some of my friends stayed in the main lodge and experienced issues with roof leaks onto their bed on the upper floor or overpowering musty/moldy smells at the lowest floor level, both attesting to the need for investment in maintenance. There was also one report of a haunted room, but this may only have been a matter of nerves in the occupant.
Their restaurant was closed for renovations. This was not advertised when we made our reservation. They did serve a basic breakfast in a side dining area consisting typically of scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, orange juice and coffee. They also advertised a nightly sherry and chocolate turn-down service, but this never materialized during our 3-4 nights there. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful which is a plus. There is much room for improvement, however, if it is to attain any semblance of its...
Read moreI'm very happy that I decided to stay here - especially for the price. I paid the same amount as I would have paid had I decided to stay at the larger "two star" hotel chains (under $100.00), but was treated to a uniquely southern atmosphere and got to experience a piece of a hugely important part of US history. This artistic/architectural style (Antebellum) is incredible. Basically, the entire area is dripping with history! I stayed in the Grant room (Ulysses S. Grant allegedly spent the night there during the civil war when he was still a general) and even thumbed through the book of battle songs (some of them were surprisingly poetic) that was on one of the tables. I was awake into the late hours, so I wandered around the mansion after the other guest had retired and took a few photos before bed. Breakfast was good - I especially liked the grits, but it is served to you and although I suppose you could ask for more, it is not buffet style like a lot of hotels and the portions are a little small. It was plenty for me though. The biggest con that I had was that there was no shower. I hate baths, but if you don't mind taking a bath, then the tub is nice enough and has one of those hand held sprayers to rinse off with (trust me, trying to shower with it is not recommended unless you want to spray the whole bathroom!). The Grant room was the only room without access to its own thermostat, but that didn't matter to me that much, since the hostess let me set it prior to setting the alarm in the office (where the thermostat lives). I tried very hard to not make too much noise since I was late arriving and stayed up even later, but as is common with older places, it is loud and very creaky. This might be something to consider if you are a light sleeper. If you are a light sleeper (or you really need a microwave or a mini-fridge), they offer cottages across the street. I didn't see the inside of the cottages during my stay, so I can't really compare them to the main mansion. Overall the hotel has more of a bed and breakfast feel to it than anything else and is an excellent way to experience the local atmosphere as well as a significant part of American civil war history.
I would recommend staying here - especially if you too can find a great...
Read moreEDIT: An email was sent to the business after their response to this review, per their request. However it has now been 5 days without a response. The Inn at Cedar Grove does not care about their customers or customer service- they put on a show to save public face. Utterly disgraceful. Do not waste your money on this place!
The worst customer service we've ever experienced We absolutely cannot emphasise enough that no one should stay at the Inn at Cedar Grove. It is the worse customer service we have ever experienced, from the moment we arrived and currently continuing weeks later. When we arrived at the mansion, there was no one there. We waited for 75 minutes to try and get checked in, with no one arriving, before just leaving. This includes the two emails that were never responded to, and a phone call from another guest on our behalf that was not answered during that time. We were not informed of how to enter the house and therefore came back later to find the house locked, so we had to interrupt another guests’ stay just to get to our room. The next morning we finally saw a member of staff who rang the owner to talk to us about our complaints and experience, but they refused to come to resolve our concerns in-person, and worse, we had to follow up with an email again despite the member of staff promising that the owner would email. We have had to email prompt the owners multiple times to try and discuss how poorly we have been treated, where finally they stopped responding entirely. This not only ruined our stay, but our first time in Vicksburg, and our anniversary celebration. We believe this should not be the treatment guests deserve when visiting Cedar Grove, and are appalled with the entire experience. No one deserves this treatment, customer service, and overall experience. Do...
