Some things seems to be constant about the hotels in Ha Giang. Hard beds, dirty kettles and the occasional blackout.
When I asked if I could change my kettle to a clean one, the hapless staff realised that all their kettles were plagued with the same layer of unknown white muck. After which they suggested me to get my hot water from the lobby drink directly. The lobby was just a short walk from my room so I did just that a couple of times. During my stay in Dong Van, the power went out two times in quick succession. Both times, I heard some shouts in the lobby and the sound of a generator starting up, a good sign that at least the hotel is on top of blackout situations.
Even though they speak little English, the staff are always ready to smile and ready to help. Read morePros: hotel room is basic and simple, with nice, clean and comfortable beds. That's important. Location is convenient, good restaurants close by.||Cons: hotel is located on 2nd floor so we have to climb a flight of stairs. Not an issue but one of our family member had knee injury so it's an issue for him. When we checked in, was told we have to pay permit fees that cost USD15 per person to walk around town for foreigners. This is ridiculous and when we refused, they threatened we will be stopped and questioned by police. We asked around, and people told us the permit no longer required for foreigners as it has been lifted off. Lastly, our hotel room was booked with breakfast and they told us breakfast served from 6am as we have to leave early, we were there at 630am and the person to prepare breakfast was not starting work yet. We asked front desk and he said starts at 7am. Anyway, quite a few communication issue with front desk.||Overall, do not expect much in this district, as long as the room and bed is clean and comfortable,...
