As someone whose travelled all over Vietnam, I've stayed at all sorts of accomodations. Most of the time I opt for 3 star hotel rooms to retire to after a long and hard day of travelling. However, my experience at Bống Bang Homestay has been one of the best I've had. Rooms are cheap but also very comfortable, regardless if you choose a private room of a dorm. Cleanliness was consistent across the board when it came to facilities like toilets and showers. The hospitality was the truest form of Vietnamese hospitality. As a Vietnamese person myself I can honestly say that staying at Bống Bang Homestay is a travelling experience in and of itself, as you are able to enjoy authentic the Vietnamese traditions of eating and drinking as a guest.
Few personal experiences that I loved about staying here:
I needed earphones for the night and wasn't able to drive as I had been drinking. The staff were happy and willing to help by driving out to pick up a pair of earphones for me from the town.
On top of that, I had forgotten my watch in my room as I left to continue on the Ha Giang loop. When I called to see if it wss found, I was able to arrange to have it delivered back to Ha Giang so I could pick it up.
We all hear about the things one should be worried about when in Vietnam, but honestly, stepping into Bống Bang Homestay, I felt it was all stripped away leaving behind only all that is great about Vietnamese culture. Genuine and accomodating staff who remind us that there is more life than just money. :')

Read moreThe main problem here is the name "homestay". That gives you the impression that you are staying with a family in their home. It's not. It's a hostel.||In almost all the rave reviews I read here and elsewhere the roosters are the only real mention of the noise. That's probably because everyone is waking up with a hangover :-). The "private" room (shared bathroom with 30+ people) has paper thin walls and as the owners distribute the rice wine the noise levels gradually rise until it reaches its peak with the karaoke singing which ends around 10.30pm. Then you have the noise of the partiers until well after 11 followed by the noise of them going to bed upstairs when you hear every creek of the floorboards and get a gentle sprinkle of dust from the roof as they walk upstairs.||The room is basic but comfortable. The shared facilities are ok and the owners are nice but compared to other places we stayed in this price range it's expensive for what you get (breakfast is extra)||If you are a backpacker and you are going from hostel to hostel then I can see why this gets great reviews so don't be put off by my review. I am doing this just for others that are not...
Read moreBest hostel in the first stop of the Ha Giang loop!
I was recommended Bongbang homestay through a girl we encountered on our travels, so I couldn't write a review on booking sites as we never booked it online. We sort of just stopped at the first town of the loop, Yen Minh, and dropped by the hostel to see if they have any beds available. I guess you can say we were truly lucky, as this homestay has been recommended by many other travellers and hostels, so majority of young travellers (particularly those travelling in BIG groups through the loop, I'm speaking about 20 and more people) all flock to this hostel at the same time. Well, for the price we paid, we received a nice warm bed in a dormitory-styled room, clean bathrooms with hot shower (important!) and a family-style dinner and breakfast (complete with 'happy water', of course). So would I recommend Bongbang...
