Otto's Fish Market used to be awesome, a few short months ago. I live just around the corner and it was my automatic go-to on non-cooking nights. But manager/chef Kon retired in June 2024, and now Otto's Fish Market is not even a shadow of what it was. For example, the chips used to be extraordinarily good, but now they barely come up to the standard of any ordinary suburban fish and chip shop. Thankfully, the chip serves are half the size they used to be, so we're not wasting too much stodgy potato. Likewise, the battered mackerel was previously fabulous, but the fish I paid for tonight (Friday) was dry, tasteless and seemed more like some 'mystery fish' than mackerel. As an additional irritation, some parts of our order were missing, though we were still charged for them. Sure, we could have gone back and asked where those pieces were, but then probably would have had to wait another half an hour while they mucked up someone else's order while 'fixing' ours. It's also interesting that the new 'chef'/manager employed to replace Kon appears to have changed over most if not all of the staff - perhaps the former cooks were too vocal in describing how the business should be run? - and then decided that shouting at the newbies is a valid motivational tactic to cover their lack of experience. I've previously given Otto's a 5 star review. Now? It is sad to say that there are now far better options not far away. Otto's used to be run to a high standard - now it looks like it's pursuing maximum profit from minimum quality food. I give it 2 stars at the moment. Just barely. It's edible. It's just...
Read moreNew review: Adding a new review based on my last purchase. 1 star. This fish & chip shop was one of Townsville's best. Based on my last order it has become one of Townsville's worst. It appears there's new owners & staff. Sadly they are not upholding quality standards. The prices have increased to an eye watering degree. This is made worst when the quality and quantity of food has declined sharply. The size of the pieces of fish has halved. The chips are soggy and were undercooked. Staff also got my order wrong and we're unapologetic when I made this apparent. I loved getting fish and chips from here but I won't anymore.
Original review: 5 stars. A rarely known thing about Townsville is the style of its Fish n Chips. Thin to medium thick Spanish Mackerel that's hand cut, not frozen, covered in course crunchy crumbs and cooked to slightly over. It's unique and the best in the world! There a few shops doing fish this way and Otto's is absolutely one of the best. Pro tip is to not let your order stay long in the wrapped paper, it will sweat from the heat and go soggy. Eat it straight away or open up the paper and let...
Read moreApologies for an honest review. Ordered grilled snapper and chips. At a time that would have suited more to the person standing in the kitchen, making the best of food they could to satisfy their customers. However! Our experience was the first and last here. All we got was dry snapper and a very oily and undercooked battered snapper as well, undercooked chips and burnt, and to top it used oil. We couldn't enjoy our dinner! Even so, the person behind the counter didn't seem interested at all in serving our order. I mean, I'm not sure what the rave is all about. Maybe the restaurant needs a bit of tweaking in their services and meal preps...c'mon guys who doesn't love fish n chips! For all the hard work you do, you need positive feedback to enjoy...
