I regularly spend time staying on the island with family who live there. My one recommendation is walk, don't drive! The Koala walk is super easy and a heap of fun for young families, you wont regret leaving your car behind! I guarantee you will see a Koala if you walk.... if you drive around the island looking in the sky out the window you probably will miss them!
The Island ferry is free for pedestrians and I think the limited parking at the main picnic and playground should be left available for people who really need it like parents with babies, the elderly or people with mobility aids. (particularly on Public holidays when you can have car ques but no pedestrian ques)
I understand that some people may be in a situation with mobility restrictions but aside from this it is such an easy walk and has recently had more time and money invested in the walk making the paths even...
Read moreRaymond Island Koala Trail is so beautiful and the Koalas 🐨 are so cute! At first Mum and I thought it was a scam, locals laughing at tourists walking around their beautiful island looking up, tripping over searching for Koalas that were no where to be seen... then all of a sudden we saw the cutest little face sleeping away high up in a tree and it was magical! You keep walking and walking, looking up in hopes you see more, and you do! People chat and share sightings ot really is a magical place, tours are available and bikes to hire, we just walked on our own. Definitely worth a visit and definitely worth donating if you can, most shops have a collection tin for the little cuties. Great play ground for kids too. Awesome day out. Leave your car at Paynesville and just wander...
Read morePark your car in Paynesville and take the free ferry ride across to Raymond Island (the trip takes about 2.5 minutes!). There are maps of the koala walk on the waters edge so you can take a photo when you arrive. The koala walk starts just across the park and the terrain is flat so an easy 2km or so around. There are private houses on the island (please be respectful) and we saw several koalas straight away in the trees in people's front gardens! You can stick to the paved streets, or you can head off in to the cleared path bush walk. There is also the opportunity to hire bikes and ride ons if you're not able to walk. We saw 16 koalas! Highly worth the trip and you're almost guaranteed to see some of our fury friends if you go. Massive hilight of our trip to...
