Great food with a bitter aftertaste of bad service.
We came here with the "Jong Keukengeweld"-offer for lunch. It was extremely calm in the restaurant, which was nice.
After being seated we got the drink menu and ordered water, a white wine and a beer. The waiter serving us was a bit confusing when explaining what was included in the offer and made us feel unwelcome. The wine was served immediately but we had to wait 15 minutes for my beer and the water. The amuse-bouche was nice, especially the beer meringue. The entree, made with typical, seasonal Belgian ingredients, was great. Also the main course; pheasant with black pudding cream and celeriac was amazing. Had to wait 15 minutes again for my beer, which I got when my meal was finished. The raspberry dessert was a really good finisher. A nice touch was the dessert being served and explained by the chef.
After asking for the bill twice we noticed we were overcharged. The waiter whom we mentioned it to was really rude about it and trying to justify it with nonsense arguments before eventually taking it off.
It is so sad that the food is great but the staff fails to make you feel welcome and appreciated. Also useless waiting times for drinks when there was almost no one in the restaurant. And a lot of small things like leaving unused wine glasses on the table, leaving empty bread basket for the entire time, etc. - basic things that I, as a hospitality professional, am really bothered about in a restaurant of this status.
We really left with a bitter after taste and won't come back here and will not recommend it to anyone. To bad because the kitchen is on a way higher level than the...
Read moreI am not frequently dining in fancy restaurants , and when I do, I expect small portions of food and paying too much for what I get. Volta proved me wrong. My reservation by phone had not been registered so when we arrived there was no table for us. After some discussion we were offered a place at the bar which we grudgingly accepted, an boy,am I glad we did! The service from the staff and especially the bartender who had to babysit us, was first class without being highbrow or snobbish. Foodwise we went for the menu. They did provide an alternative for the meat dishes for my girlfriend. I have nothing but praise for the food. The quality of the dishes they served was excellent, beautifully dressed and sublime taste. We liked every single peace of food they put in front of us. I do not remember that I actually smelled and nibbled and tasted and discussed my food like this. Although the portions were small, we were very satisfied at the end where we struggled the coffee and sweets. I would advise anyone to ask for a sommelier to suggest a wine. We are red wine drinkers but had primarily fish on our menu. The wine we were recommended fitted the food perfectly. To wrap this up: although we started on a false note (hence 4 and not 5 stars) this experience at the Volta almost blew my socks of. I will certainly go back there, IF they will accept my...
Read moreSpent NYE here. We went with high expectations, Volta has a decent reputation.
The night was 1 big dissapointment. 140€ per person makes you believe everything here will be taken care off. That was not the case AT ALL.
The arrival was very chaotic. Not really friendly staff since they had to cope with a situation in wich they clearly did not know how to act.
Once we arrived to our table, it seemed that we were the only table (!) without chairs. When we asked for the possibility to get some chairs, the staff said they didn't had enough of them and couldn't even provide one. Later in the evening a staffmember passed us a chair from another table. Once those people got back from smoking, we had a few words with them but gave them the chairs back. Atmosphere control was below zero.
The food was good, even though some ingredients mentionned on the menu were never to be found on my plate.
The wine was announced tot be matching the food. I tasted 2 kinds of wine while there were 4 different plates. So far for the matching wines...
We contacted Volta (always possible that it went wrong) but did not had any respons so far.
Conclusion; in Ghent you can have a better experience that is even less expensive.
Volta promisses a lot, but does not know how to do so...
