I've been excited to try Masala Roots since hearing great things in the local news about their move from Brentwood Bay to View Royal! There are too few restaurants in View Royal so this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and within walking distance for us too! The new place is fresh and clean and newly renovated, modern, and welcoming. The lady at the front was most welcoming and patient, too. I settled on the Afghani Malai Chicken Tikka (GF), which comes with complimentary rice and green veggie raita sauce and a very good deal for only $18.99. When she asked me how spicy I would like my meal, I knew I was in for a treat! Ready after just 10 minutes, she passed it to me waiting outside on their patio, although they have two small tables for indoor eating. As soon as I got home, I sat down and devoured it, my tastebuds are still dancing! The spice was just right, with some nice crunchy vegetables and hot chili peppers gave it a nice kick! The raita helped round out the flavours of the dish perfectly, and the rice and the chicken were both well seasoned and perfectly cooked as well. They also have some smaller options and vegetarian dishes I am eager to try soon too! My recommendations are: offer cutlery in case it is needed, I ate at home so I was okay but I forgot to ask in case I was eating at work, on the road, park, or beach. look into using compostable, biodegradable, containers instead of plastic. While not styrofoam, and plastic is recyclable, I prefer to make even less of an impact on the environment if possible. I did not see bottles of water on the menu or free ice water available for eating in which would be a nice option especially for spicy dishes. Tip options for Takeaway should start at 10%. I was happy to tip 15% as I did sit down for a bit while waiting, however, that is the standard tip I like to offer when not eating in an...
Read moreBest authentic Indian food we’ve ever eaten. Owned by incredibly kind lovely people that really care about creating delicious food. The flavours…. I’m lacking words to describe just how delicious and flavourful everything was. They also use fresh quality ingredients. You can taste this and we did in every dish we had ordered. This restaurant is run with the utmost integrity and talent. It was such a treat to eat our meal. We have gluten and dairy dietary restrictions in our family as well as choosing to be pescatarian. They were so kind, caring and patient with accommodating our dietary requests. We had no issues with any gluten or dairy cross contact from the food we ate here.
If we lived in or near the area, this would be our go-to restaurant. So looking forward to the next time we are in the area to have more of their delicious food.
Please do yourself a favour and check this gem of a restaurant out!
We ordered takeout for dinner from here on Dec 14th. We had (asked for everything mild) Goan Vindaloo Sauce Curry with fish, Coconut Curry Sauce with fish, Kabuli Channa, Eggplant Bhartha. We also ordered the Okra masala but during pick up when we found out that the okra was fried in the same fryer as chicken the owners were so kind, the Chef created just for us a gluten free vegan spinach sauce/korma dish on the spot in literally a few minutes and it was really delicious. Everything we ate was just so incredibly delicious. If you love smoky eggplant, make sure to try their Eggplant Bhartha— I’m still daydreaming about it!
To the very kind and talented owners, it was so lovely meeting you and our entire family loved your food—I’m very sorry for this late review. Thank you for the most delicious feast and all your kindness. We will see you the next time...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I ate food from here one hour ago and just HAD to leave a review. Everything we had was stunning and delicious.
We originally came in just expecting to get some sides for our curry from home, but ended up getting naan, paratha, mixed vegetable riata, and the pocket khulcha. Everything was so delicious. The pocket khulcha blew our minds with flavour. I couldn't describe it other than similar to a samosa, a taco, and with the riata (which was so aromatic with black salt) was just otherworldly!
It was awesome to find an Indian menu where so much was unique and unlike anything I've ever seen or read before. I honestly didn't even recognise any of their small plates which was just so fun!
Tiniest nitpick was that the lassi could have been a touch colder, and the room was very hot. But not a big deal at all, it was so friendly and the lassi was delicious.
Honestly I'm gutted I didn't get a curry, but we will definitely be back to try some...
