I was disappointed in this tour. The brochure shows a brilliant blue color you are supposed to see and all I saw was a little bit of a dull silver. I feel the brochure misrepresented what could truly be seen with the naked eye. I even emailed the company telling them I was disappointed that I did not see what the brochure shows. She emailed me back this. "I promise you we do not photo-shop our images. Certain cameras have the capability of capturing the low frequency of light differently than others to be closer to what our naked eye can see. We had a well known photographer from Red Bull come and do our photos and getting the actual image is not as simple as it seems. Getting these images takes time, and specific settings. We got the photos directly from his camera and ensured not to make them brighter. However I would like to note that in order to get the full view of the glow around the kayak for the image, the cameras shutter was held open for at least 20 seconds while my friend and I kept paddling to have the full glow around us. It took us a long time to get our images." I photograph Northern Lights and get images off my camera that the naked eye cannot see when the shutter is left open. That is what I feel happened here. She also said that they splashed around in the water for 20 seconds while the shutter was open, but if this was the case, the people in the photos would be a blur and they were not. After the short kayak my husband and I went to the edge of the bay and played around in the water and actually saw more then what we saw with a guide. It was $118 to see silvery water and we could have saved that money and splashed around ourselves. Our guide, Josh was very nice and knowledgeable but he ran out of things to say about the bio and pointed out constellations. It was a starry night and it was a nice touch. Just a word to the wise, don't expect to see any brilliant blue colors like on the brochures. That is my biggest complaint about this tour and the price is too high for what we were shown. I think the price should be $39 not $59 since it...
Read moreOur long awaited family vacation finally took place in July 2022. We were staying on 7 Mile Beach but had already planned to go on a bioluminescent bay tour using Cayman Kayaks.
A few tips. We had a super moon on that Wed. so this was good for the bioluminescence since the tides impact the amount of luminescence you see. Going when the moon is bright decreases the impact thus waiting until Sunday was a great idea. Also, on Sunday, there is less traffic!!
We decided to go over to the East End and eat at Tukka East. We sat and watched the sunset and had a great meal. Our drive was only 20 minutes from Tukka East so we left at 9pm for our 9:30pm tour.
We had Tom as our guide as we were a party of 5 and another families of 5 (unknown to us) was there as well. The kayaks are tandem thus one person from each party had to share- not a big deal. We set off into the darkness where Tom was great at explaining the trip.
We stopped halfway to have a look at the starts. Tom had a laser light and pointed out several constellation and gave us a great overview of the stars in the sky and how old mariners navigated. It was truly unexpected yet spectacular. Well done Tom.
We then continued to the bay where one could see the sparkle of the bioluminescence on the paddles. It was impossible to get pictures or video with my iPhone but I tried. Memories will suffice. Since there are lots of jellyfish, we did not swim and that was fine. It was a memorable experience and well worth the cost.
Cayman Kayaks was professional and gave superb directions to enjoy the evening. It was a late night but well worth it. Good luck...
Read moreWe have been visiting Grand Cayman for 40 years and had no idea this bay was a bioluminescent bay ( and one of only six in the world!) Tom was our guide and it was a fantastic experience, definitely one of the highlights of our trip. I cannot imagine having the same experience in a motorized boat. We paddled out under a sky brilliant with stars. Tom periodically stopped to show point out the constellations in the sky. It was one of the few times, in years, where I have been able to see the Milky WayâŚbeautiful. Cayman Kayaks only offers this trip when the moon is in the perfect phase to enhance your experience. If you are fortunate enough to be on the island at this time, you should definitively do this! If you are staying in the Seven Mile Beach area, it is worth driving around the island for this company over the motorized boat experience. I would suggest that you take this opportunity to explore the East End and North Side of the island which is quite different from Seven Mile Beach. Explore the caves, have lunch at Vivines, The Caboose, Grape Tree Hut or Back Yard BBQ, spend the afternoon at Kaibo, have dinner at Over The Edge and then join Cayman Kayak for the bioluminescence tour. You will have a totally different experience than your friends in Georgetown!
If I had one suggestion for Cayman Kayaks, it would be to replace your paddles with ones that do not hold water in the shaft. The shafts hold the water and then leak out on you as you paddleâŚ.making for a wetter experience...
