Wanderlust Walks Hong Kong Street Art Tours — Local services in Hong Kong

Though born and raised in Hong Kong, I’m like many others neglecting the historical and valuable sides of this fast-moving city. Fortunately the tour to Wan Chai organized by Alexandra reminded me the beauty and charm of my hometown.

The entire tour was well-planned and presented in a unique way. Apart from introducing famous landmarks such as Hopewell Centre, Blue House and the former Wan Chai Market etc, Alex also took me to the gorgeous Pak Tai (Northern Emperor) Temple, the haunted Nam Koo Terrace as well as the delicate Starstreet Precinct. The fusion of modernization and tradition amazed me in many ways.

Not only Alex’s profound knowledge about Hong Kong’s history (Especially for the land reclamation in Wan Chai) and Chinese folk religions impressed me a lot, but also her true passion and love for my city, even though she’s an expat. As a local resident, I have learnt to admire what we have left, and remember what we have lost from this short but remarkable journey.

Whether you are already acquainted with street art or, like me, really don't understand the difference between street art and plain old graffiti, this tour is fantastic and really highly recommended. Alex's 2 1/2 hour tour of Central and Sheung Wan takes in two dozen or more genuine works of art, some huge, some small, but virtually all of which I would have walked past on another day. Alex, who has spent years researching the art of Hong Kong's walls and the artists who have created it, explained the content and context of the works we saw and also talked about the artists and their other works around the world. She is entertaining and incredibly well-researched in her field and I have certainly come away with a new perspective on street art and with an intention of repeating a similar tour after next year's HKWalls festival. My boyfriend and I visited HK during HKwalls and were EXTREMELY lucky that Alex could squeeze us in for a private tour.

We wouldn’t have seen half the art we saw without her expert knowledge and guidance and we even got to talk to some of the artists while they were doing their walls!

As our tour was at the beginning of HKwalls, we spent some of our last day in HK revisiting the walls Alex had taken us to, to see how they had progressed, amazing!

Alex gave us a great tip, we visited Wong Chuk Hang on the South Island Line to see art from the HKwalls 2017 edition, and we even managed to find some street art while we were in Macau for the day!
