Browse a great selection of books in a restored car park while 1940's French avant-garde music plays (it is, after all, the Librarie Avant-Garde). Yes, it might be the best and most complete bookstore in China. But to include it on a list (as some lists do) of the best bookstores in the world is really a stretch.

Great novelty place but I would not want to be caught here in a fire! Have a cup of coffee and a doughnut in the cafe or buy a postcard and clip it to the wall inside near the giftshop. Majority of books are in mandarin of course and lots or young chinese posers taking Selfies or trying to look cool while reading or sleeping. Go during the week early to...
