What a FANTASTIC trip. Renato and the captain of the boat were WONDERFUL. They spotted many animals and birds in their own environment. We were so privileged to see many beautiful birds, the Blue Heron, the Amazon kingfisher, giant Egrets and snowy Egrets , Anhingas, laughing Falcons and Owls. Iguanas and brightly coloured lizards were pointed out on the banks and in the trees, we even saw the 'Jesus' lizard, walking on the water. Long nosed bats were along the tree trunks. We saw howler monkeys moving through the trees, and sloths right at the top of the trees. A Caiman crocodile showed no interest in us as we watched her and her baby, very close up. Renato perservered in showing us, even when we couldn't manage to spot what he was trying to show us. Eventually we saw everything, thanks to his infinite patience and enthusiasm. This trip was a calm, peaceful journey through the wonderful waterways, observing and respecting these beautiful birds and animals in their own environment. Renato was the most wonderfully informed guide. He loves where he lives and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with others. This trip was the high point of 2 weeks travelling around...
Read moreOne of the top highlights of our whole trip! We made the arrangements over WhatsApp. Renato and Jesus took us on a fascinating and enlightening tour of the river and lagoon in Cańo Negro Reserve. They let us use very nice binoculars and showed us almost 60 different species of birds, including the Amazon kingfisher, spotted sandpiper, bronzy hermit, roseate spoonbill, a huge tree full of snorting neotropic comorants, various warblers and tanagers, and several types of egrets and herons. My favorite was the black and white owl--the biggest owl I've ever seen. We also saw a cayman, several iguanas, butterflies, turtles, and howler monkeys. The photos on my iPhone did not do it justice, but I will never forget this experience. Take their advice for the roads to get there based on where you are coming from. We chose the shorter scenic route through pineapple farms and ended up on a very bumpy dirt road. The nearby restaurant they recommended was...
Read moreOur family of 8 (3 generations) had an amazing time out on the river and in the canals with Renato and Choo Choo. That reserve is truly magical, a place still lost to the demands of modern times and overflowing with life. Even though we departed at 10:30a -- well past prime time for the morning's wildlife activity -- we saw countless species: at least 30 kinds of birds, two species of monkey, sloth, caiman, bats, screech owls, JC lizards, iguanas, turtles, snakes......and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Choo Choo's ability to spot animals that were completely hidden to everyone else, along with Renato's knowledge and infectious passion for the area were a perfect combination to keep us engaged. And even though we paid for a 3-hour tour, they were more than happy to keep going -- seemingly as long as we wanted to. I'd do it again in a heartbeat....
