Beware of Scams on the Beach! Also obvious animal abuse soured our experience.
Tour was amazing. Our host Surprise was absolutely fantastic and probably the best host I’ve ever had on an excursion. Thoughtful, kind and caring. He also helped us with some issues we had with communication outside of the excursion for a personal matter. Very solid and kind gentleman. Felt protected with him (as we are a group of young females) and helped us with a problem with a pushy guy on the beach trying to steal. I would give the whole experience a 5/5. HOWEVER, this is a warning to all visitors to NEVER support the animal vendors as they abuse and neglect these creatures. Seen it first hand on our tour at Macao Beach. An iguana with a logo branded onto its skin…...really!? Another one with its toes ripped out to not scratch tourists after being forcefully placed on your shoulder then demanding $50USD! Again, tour was amazing but soured the experience seeing such a horrible thing. Also the beach (the people obviously working alongside the company are scammers and try to take advantage of customers) Tip for the business: don’t bring your customers to an environment where they will be scammed and forced to pay $50 for a beer and $80 to take a picture with a bird. Cheapens the experience. Would suggest the company not bring customers where they will be harassed and annoyed for 20 min.
The host does his best to keep us happy, smiling and enjoying our experience. Obviously a problem with the company itself. The photo attached shows an iguana with its toes ripped out… be careful my friends as supporting these beach venders means supporting...
Read moreAwesome tour, from the bus out to the ATV to the beach and cave. Mr. Surprise was fun and a great guide. Top notch.
Tips: Be sure to bring cash for drinks and souvenirs and tip your tour guide. There are a few groups of kids that will ask for $1 along the way also.
We purchased our tour from a vendor on the beach - DON'T. They're cheaper online.
They sell goggles, handkerchiefs and face masks before the tour. If you're on an ATV, you're up high and don't need them. If you're on a buggy you will get muddy and dusty from the vehicles in front of you and how low you are to the ground. You will go through deep muddy puddles frequently.
There's a water filled cave you can jump in and swim....for approximately 60 seconds. It's 25 feet deep and you have to use a rope to pull yourself out. Don't bother with bringing a towel for the tour if you don't plan on going in. Same with the beach stop.
The bus that picks you up will drop passengers off at their hotels, so be prepared for a long ride home if you were the last to be picked up.
Mama Juana demonstration was entertaing. You can sample and purchase cocoa, coconut oil, green tea, Mama Juana, and other various medicinal items.
They take pics of you along your tour for purchase afterwards. ...
Read moreDriving the buggies was a blast! You get quite a lot of time in them which is great. However, they take you to a beautiful beach where you are swarmed with locals wanting you to buy their food/drinks and merchandise and you only get 20 minutes here, which was very disappointing. We were there during lunchtime so we very much would have liked at least an hour here to eat lunch and enjoy this beach. We were then rushed to our next destination for 15 minutes where we were bum rushed by locals again to buy their goods and not given enough time to do so. We very much would have liked to purchase from them to support their communities but were rushed out of there once again.
We then head to the final destination to see the cave and enjoy a quick dip. Once again, we were bombarded by people trying to get us to purchase from them but we only had 10 minutes to get down to the cave and back out to the buggies again.
It was a nice itinerary for an outing in the DR but the constant pressure to give money and/or buy something on top of not having enough time in each spot to really enjoy really sucked the fun out of this day.
On the flip side, the men that accompanied us were helpful and the picture package was a nice touch and the pics turned out...
