Usually combined in a day trip from Luxor with the Dendara Temple, we actually stayed at the House Of Life hotel which is literally metres away from the entrance of the temple. This enabled us to be the only visitors at the site when it opened and for the next three hours when the first tour bus arrived.
The temple was constructed in the 13th century BC by funnily enough Seti I. After completing about half of the temple, Seti I decided to let his son, the future Ramses II, to complete construction by dying. Ramses II eventually completed the temple.
The 19th Dynasty temple is unusually L shaped and constructed of white limestone. 36 sandstone pylons adorn the interior the temple.
Some of the most exquisite wall decorations can be found here many with the original dynamic colours.
In the first hypostyle hall when you look up you may be lucky to locate the famous Helicopter Heiroglyph near the roof.
Also located at the site in the Gallery of Kings is the famed Abydos King List.

Read moreExcellent temple. This was possibly the best run temple we visited in Egypt.
We were greeted by a resident archaeologist who said that he would be happy to answer any questions we might have. We asked some questions, and he then gave us a tour with loads of information about the temple and the hieroglyphics. He asked for nothing in return, just his chance to show us around and to show us his passion for his work.
We tried to offer a small tip, but he would not accept.. not normal in Egypt!!
The site itself is well managed and looked after with great examples of Egyptian history. This is the location of the famous helicopter, tank and submarine hieroglyphics. I don't care what the experts say... they are freaky in their image of modern tech! Did Egyptians really not time travel or have contact with aliens?? Probably not but you can see why people think so!!
Must visit even though its a...
