A superb museum that offers profound insights into the history and culture of the Savoie region. Apparently it was reopened in 2023 after a €25 million renovation and four years of work. It shows. Start at the top (second floor) and work down. The well-chosen exhibits are arranged chronologically (paleolithic - present) but there are also themes ('Power & Territory'; 'Population & Movement'; 'Resources & Food' etc.). Make sure you leave enough time to see the 14th century Cruet murals on the walkway overlooking the Reception area, which are a highlight of the museum. Discovered in the Château de la Rive in Cruet (Savoie department), these depict scenes taken from 'Girart de Vienne', an old French 'chanson de geste' by Bertrand de Bar-sur-Aube. The staff are very friendly and one gets the impression that they really want you to enjoy your visit. In short, this museum is...

We truly enjoyed our visit to this museum. It is a modern exhibit in a beautiful old building in the center of Chambéry. The exhibits are well-organized and educational. The history of the Savoie region is rich and interesting and this visit provided context for the cultural, political, social, and anthropological history that has shaped the region. I wish we had more time to spend as we were here for nearly two hours! We do not speak/read French so we probably could have gone through a bit quicker but we’re using google translate with the placards, although the videos offer English subtitles which was...

Truly excellent museum with exhibits about the history of the Savoie region and contemporary issues too. Seems hidden away, but it has been recently renovated, breathing new life into the exhibits. Staff are very friendly, and offered me an English language translation book of the main information throughout the permanent collection. There is a small museum shop and plenty of lockers next to the toilets on the first floor.
