Chapel of Agios Ioannis Theologos — Local services in Municipality of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades

A beautiful spiritual church carved out of a cave hundreds of years ago. On such a windy day I was on my hands and knees climbing up the rocky path to reach it like a true pilgrim. I guess the purpose of making it difficult to reach is to make sure one has to make an effort to reach it. Inside, the walls hang with pictures of various icons, saints and Jesus. I had the whole place for myself for half an hour before someone else came. Although I am not a practicing Christian but being alone in such a spiritual place was such a moving experience. La chiesetta di Theologaki (Agios Ioannis Theologos) sorge sul dorso ripido della montagna che si trova a est di Chora. È stata parzialmente ricavata da una grotta di granito: le uniche parti che sono state costruite sono la facciata ed il campanile. Da alcune antiche icone al suo interno può essere datata intorno al 1200. Ci si arriva con una bella passeggiata di circa due chilometri da Chora, ma la strada, anche se in salita, è bella a parte l’ultimo centinaio di metri da percorrere tra rocce e arbusti. Non si impiegano più di 30-40 minuti. La fatica è ripagata dalle emozioni che si provano entrando in sintonia con la spiritualità del posto. Da qui si gode una bella vista su Chora e la Portara, con sullo sfondo la spiaggia di Agios Georgios, Stelida e l'isola di Paros. Easy walk up the hill, beautiful viewpoints and really calm atmosphere. Was closed when I was there but still enjoyed. You can watch pretty much the whole city from there and the beautiful island of Paros. Also possible to see Mykonos and Delos. Ferries are still loud...
