Dargah Hazrat Yousufain and Sharifain, also known as Yousuf Baba Dargah, stands as one of Hyderabad’s most revered Sufi shrines, located in Bharat Nagar, Aghapura, Nampally.
The dargah is the final resting place of two prominent Sufi saints and former Mughal military commanders, Hazrath Syed Shah Yousufuddin (Yousuf Baba) and Hazrath Syed Shah Sharifuddin (Sharif Baba). Both originally hailed from Syria and became disciples of the renowned Sufi master Sheikh Kaleemullah Jahanabadi during their pilgrimage to Mecca.
Their journey brought them to India, where they served under Emperor Aurangzeb and later settled in Hyderabad after the conquest of the Deccan, dedicating their lives to spiritual teaching and service.
During the Mughal siege of Golconda, Syed Shah Yousufuddin and Syed Shah Sharifuddin were commanders in Aurangzeb’s army. One night, a powerful hurricane swept through the army’s encampment, destroying nearly everything in its path. Remarkably, only one tent remained untouched, its candle still burning. Inside, the two commanders were found reading the Quran by candlelight, completely undisturbed by the storm.
This event was seen as a divine sign of their spiritual stature and protection. The miraculous survival of their tent and the continued burning of the candle, while all else was devastated, led to their recognition as saints.
This narration of Miracle became a symbol of their piety and closeness to God, elevating their status among both the troops and the local population. After their deaths, their burial site in Nampally became a revered shrine, attracting visitors from all faiths who seek blessings and spiritual solace.
The dargah complex, with its striking dome constructed during the Nizam era, is a blend of spiritual heritage and architectural elegance. The site is not just a mausoleum but also a vibrant spiritual center, featuring a 200-year-old Khanqah (Sufi lodge) behind the main building, which serves as a place for prayer, meditation, and Sufi gatherings.
The interiors are adorned with hand-crafted chandeliers and cusped arches, enhancing the sanctity and grandeur of the space.
Visitors to the dargah experience a unique atmosphere, especially on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays when the shrine is bustling with devotees from diverse backgrounds.
The approach to the dargah is lively, with flower sellers and food vendors adding to the festive ambience. The shrine is known for its inclusive spirit, welcoming people of all faiths who come to seek blessings, offer prayers, or fulfill vows.
The dargah also holds historical significance, with the burial ground containing the tombs of notable personalities such as the celebrated Urdu poet Daagh Dehlvi. Over generations, the site has remained a focal point for spiritual solace, community gatherings, and cultural continuity in Hyderabad.
