Read moreWe stayed in Selva as a base for a week of skiing in Val Gardena, the Sellaronda, and beyond. This area truly offers something for everyone.
There are easily accessible nursery slopes for beginners in every town and village. For families, there are cruisy blue runs, like those at Alpe di Suise, with stunning backdrops. Access via the gondola out of Ortisei is excellent. For those who enjoy red runs, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy, including several World Cup runs. Don’t miss the 10.5km run from Secada into Ortisei—it’s not difficult but very scenic and seems to go on forever. Thrill-seekers should seek out the black runs, which are fantastic.
A top tip: if you’re doing the Sellaronda anti-clockwise, take the black run from the top of Dantercepeis; it’s quieter and easier than the red when it gets chopped up in the afternoons. For the competitive skiers, try completing the Sellaronda in both directions in one go. You can expect queues, especially on the Sellaronda, but it’s a small price to pay for some fabulous skiing. There are 1200km of connected pistes, and where they’re not connected by lift or piste, there’s an excellent ski bus service throughout the area.
The views will stun you, the refuges will satisfy you, and the mountains will inspire you. Highly recommend and cannot wait to...
Read moreAmazing Mountains but does not feel like Italy at all! The first language is German, specially in winter! I visited in September to hike and in Jan to ski. I have learned Italian, useless! Some of the lift operators do not even respond if you day Buongiorno! I went for the experience of Italy, yet none! big mistake in that sense. In the hotel, first language is German and 2nd, less informative in shorter and less information, Italian. It is that bad that at the bus stop, an Italian family was asking if anybody speaks Italian and I said I do, a little! Italian people who I had encounter w in Summer, winter and during meals were very polite, considerate, respectful of others during hike, ski, or at breakfast/dinner. The same sadly cannot be said about german speaking attitude. Some of us suffered some loud people speaking German, loud across tables even during formal candlelight dinner. They will not lower their volume and you cannot hear the music and enjoy a peaceful dinner! The hotel treats Germans better, they r special 😊 I will not choose to stay at Ortisei hotels again unless Italian culture and language is respected...
