Tatehana Wharf Morning Market — Local services in Hachinohe

Japan's largest morning market.

Indeed the place is packed with food stalls as far as the eye can see in several directions. The variety and number of stalls are a big plus.

The train lines were closed for works when we visited which made accessing the area very difficult. We had to get a taxi to do so.

In order to get the most out of the market you'd need to visit at silly-o-clock in the morning, otherwise by time you get there most of the food will have been sitting waiting for a while and will be cold by time you get it.

There was a really popular chicken stall in particular that would have been amazing, if not for the fact the chicken was cold by time we got it. Likewise at a yakitori stand the skewers were cold. At another stand we saw the owners cough into their hands and continue cooking too, so take caution with what you buy.

I'd recommend only getting products that are either freshly made on the spot, have only just been cooked, or otherwise don't need to be eaten immediately (such as bread, mochi, etc.).

The morning market, which is Hachinohe’s largest one, is held on every Sunday at Tatehana Wharf. It is also said to be the largest morning market in Japan. I went there in April 2016 with my younger sister and her husband. My older sister who was married to a Japanese and stay in Hachinohe brought us to this Sunday morning market. Later in May 2019, my sister brought my colleagues and I there. My colleagues like the place so much, it was a wonderful experience with at least 300 to 400 stalls there and it is getting lively with thousand of visitors to enjoy shopping. It is also a fishing port and is usually calm with the ships lying at anchor before leaving. Visitors can find various kinds of things, such as fresh and cooked marine products, local vegetables at reasonable price and foods such as Takikomi-gohan [rice dish cooked with various ingredients and flavored with soy...

雨がパラパラしている中、5時に起きて車で向かい、7時に現地へ！雨だし空いてるかな？なんて思っていましたが駐車場には車がズラリと並んでいて人が沢山歩いています。 駐車場は停める場所も多かったのでポツポツと空いている場所もあり無料でした。 お野菜が売られているお店が多い中を、「この辺に住んでたら買いまくったのに」と名残惜しみながら相方と練り歩き。 果物も安いしいいなぁ、としばらく歩くと食べ歩けるお店の並びが目につき始めました。 「とりあえず全部見てから買うか！」と店の並びを端まで見てから、帆立とウニの海鮮焼きを好きそうだし食べなよ！と言われて早速注文。雨がテントの屋根に溜まったのをお店の方がこれ流そうか、みたいな流れになり、離れて下さいー！そこら辺危ないかもー！なんて笑いながら注意していて、お客さんも笑いながらささーっと店先から距離を取っていました。うまく溜まった水流せたら拍手してくださいね。なんて愛嬌のある笑顔で話していて長い棒で上手にテントの水を流していました。雨でもこうやって楽しくお店を盛り上げていて、コロナなんかで大変な中なんだか暖かい気持ちになりながら拍手しました。 ついでにうにご飯も買いましたが海の味がしてとても美味しかった！有名らしい塩手羽なんかも並んで買って(この唐揚げ屋さんだけ行列が出来ていました)ホテルに持って帰って食べましたがカリカリした表面でうっすら塩味でとても美味しかったです！店先で流れている「しおてばだってば〜」とかなんとか言っている歌に洗脳されそうになります。 相方は途中の店にあったブルーベリージュースの持ち歩き用の小さいのを買って飲んでぃしたがめちゃんこ気に入ったらしく帰りに大きいのも買い足していました。 フルーツジュースで初めて飲むレベルの濃さ！こりゃうめーわ！ 引き返してきた8時くらいにはお店がちょこちょこ片付けられ始めていたので、買いたいものは即買いして歩いていた方が良いのかもしれません。フルーツを売っていたお婆ちゃんが「試食していきなよぉ！」と葡萄を食べさせてくれて、「これも試食していいから！」と小さい一房を袋に入れて、「持って帰っていいよぉー！」と渡してくれました。 流れるように試食という名のお土産をいただいてしまい、いいんですか...！？ありがとうございます！と帰ってきました。何も買わなかったのにありがとう😭 雨で足場も水溜りが沢山あるし、人も多くてたまに傘がぶつかってしまったりもあるけれど、みんな優しい店員さんばかりで、もっともっと繁盛して盛り上がっていけばいいな、と思いました。ご当地アイドル？らしき女子小学生？も雨の中歌って踊っていましたがチラリと観た感じ最前線でお婆ちゃんやおじさんが写真を撮っていたのも心がほんわかしました。落とし物の案内で放送が流れていましたが、「なんかーえっとー」と言いながら喋っているのも私は好きです(笑) 飾らない感じがとてもいい、そんなあったかい気持ちになる場所でした。八戸市に日曜いられる方...
