Akafuku mochi is a representative product of Akafuku, a Japanese confectionery located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. Akafuku mochi is a type of rice cake confectionery known as ankoromochi. The mochi is wrapped in strained red bean paste, which is said to represent the flow of the Isuzu River, with three stripes in the red bean paste. The mochi is so soft that it sometimes crumbles if it is carried home at an angle.
There is a main store in Okage Yokocho in front of the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu that looks like a teahouse. In summer, Akafuku ice is usually served with green tea ice and Akafuku mochi (rice cake). In winter, "Zenzai" made with Akafuku's rice cake and red bean paste is served[1]. In addition to the main store, "Akafuku Ice" and "Akafuku Zenzai" are also available as seasonal specialties at some directly managed stores in the Ise-Shima, Nagoya, and Osaka areas.

Read moreAkafumu (赤福) is a symbolic food of Ise area. It's a mochi wrapped in a very smooth red bean paste. As there was a long queue for dine-in during the weekend afternoon, I decided to buy the takeaway version (2 pieces) as the dessert of the night. The queue for takeaway still took some time like 10-15 minutes. Normally it has 3 days to expire. Nice to have a try while being prepared for the sweetness of it, especially to...
