Oyodo-Koyodo (大淀小淀) is a jaw-dropping, otherworldly coastal rock formation just a short walk from Tajima Falls—and it might just outshine the falls themselves. The descent is steep, but those willing to take the trek are rewarded with an astonishing, almost sacred shoreline of intricate stonework and tidal beauty. (5/5) Full Review: Oyodo-Koyodo – A Divine Slice of Coastal Japan Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) Just a few steps beyond the well-trodden path to Tajima Falls, you’ll find Oyodo-Koyodo (大淀小淀)—a marvel that, in my view, outclasses the waterfall in both atmosphere and visual drama. If Tajima Falls is the overture, Oyodo-Koyodo is the symphony’s crescendo. The descent to the shoreline is not for the faint of heart—steep and slippery in places, it’s the kind of path that demands sure footing and a bit of determination. But that’s part of the charm. Like any hidden gem, it asks something of you before revealing its full splendor. And once you’re down there, you’re met with a scene that feels carved by God: a surreal coastline where stone platforms fan out like ancient ceremonial altars, kissed by waves and decorated with a painter’s palette of sea moss, kelp, and natural lichen. The geometric precision of the rock formations feels unreal—a design that almost seems too intricate, too deliberate to be natural. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop mid-step and wonder if you’ve stumbled into a fantasy RPG’s environment design. But no, this is real—and it’s breathtaking. Despite the occasional (and admittedly pungent) sea-tinged scent from the organic ocean life (kelp, moss, and the like), the ambiance is wholly serene. There’s a meditative stillness here, interrupted only by the rhythm of crashing waves and the occasional sight of a lone fisherman perched on the taller rocks. It’s poetic, honestly—a living postcard of coastal Japan. What makes Oyodo-Koyodo even more compelling is how it reframes your view of Tajima Falls. From this vantage point, you’re not just seeing the falls from the standard platform—you’re witnessing it framed by a cathedral of stone and sea. It adds scale, depth, and a whole new perspective. And let’s not forget the photographic potential here: this place is a goldmine for travel photography. Whether you're an amateur with a smartphone or a seasoned photographer with a DSLR, you'll find no shortage of jaw-dropping angles to capture. Coupled with the nearby Hashidate Suspension Bridge, Tajima Falls, and the walking trails that tie everything together, Oyodo-Koyodo elevates the entire experience from "nice nature walk" to "unforgettable coastal adventure." It's not merely a detour—it’s a destination in its own right. Final verdict? A must-visit. For those able to make the descent, Oyodo-Koyodo is an encounter with nature at its most sacred and sublime. Don’t miss it.

A rocky path down will lead you down to the water. We did a quick swim in the protected section. It was nice and felt safe enough. It seemed like a popular spot with lots of other people coming down with all their beach gear and food like they were planning to stay a while.

Oyodo-Koyodo is an impressive place that absolutely thrilled us as a family. Between the high cliffs, the view opens up to the endless sea – this moment alone is breathtaking. The children had great fun climbing over the rocks and discovering small pools of water, while we enjoyed the fresh breeze and the sound of the waves. Despite the wild coastline, there is a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere here that invites you to pause and reflect. For families who love nature and the sea, Oyodo-Koyodo is a wonderful destination, wild, beautiful and...

This place is so amazing! If you take the stairs down you will find what can only be described as an ocean pool! The rocks and water are just so that you can enjoy swimming in the ocean safely from a pool of water inside the rocks. Lots of good places to jump off. Also the water is so clear that you can even see some fish like you are snorkling from a safe place. This was my favorite part of my trip to Shimoda and I cant wait to go...
