Nomi Shrine — Local services in Takatsuki

Tucked just south of Takatsuki Castle’s remnants, Nomi Shrine quietly traces more than a millennium of community, resilience, and prayer. Originating in the late 9th century as a Gozu Tennō shrine to ward off epidemics, its healing legacy transformed into reverence for Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Nomi-no-Sukune, Japan’s first sumo wrestler—both enshrined here today .

Passing beneath its stone torii, visitors feel history settle around them. Moss-covered lanterns line the path, and the air carries a sense of hope, anchored by the shrine’s role in combating ancient plagues and ensuring the high ground stood safe .

Inside lies a cluster of subsidiary shrines—Nagai Shrine with its elegant karamon gate, Ebisu Shrine, the Sumo Dedication platform—each a thread in Takatsuki’s spiritual tapestry . In spring, cherry blossoms paint the grounds; in summer, “flower-temizuya” (blossoms floating in the water basin) mesmerize onlookers and invite quiet meditation .

須佐之男命と野見宿禰命を祭神として祀る。

由緒

9世紀末、平安時代中期の宇多天皇の時代（887年 - 897年）、この地方に疫病がはやり、神託により牛頭天王（ごずてんのう、須佐之男命）を祀ったところ、疫病が治まったので、社殿を造営したという。江戸時代までは「牛頭天王社」と称していた。

10世紀末に高槻城が築城され、城内守護として崇敬されたが[1]、16世紀、高山右近が高槻城主となったとき、右近はキリスト教を信仰していたため、高槻城内にあった当社の社殿を破壊し社領を没収した。1619年（元和5年）、高槻城主松平紀伊守が社殿を再建した[2]。

明治元年の神仏分離により祭神の名を須佐之男命に変更した。さらに野見宿禰命を合祀して「野見神社」に改称した[2]。このため、延喜式神名帳に記載された式内社野見神社の論社の一つとされているが、『大阪府史蹟名勝天然記念物』では、式内・野見神社に擬せるために野見宿禰を合祀して「野見神社」に改称したものであると断じ、式内・野見神社の後裔社は同じ高槻市内の上宮天満宮摂社「野身神社」であるとしている。明治4年、式内社であるとして県社に列格したが、明治5年11月に郷社に降格された。
