Wakayama Station is a must-visit for cat enthusiasts and families alike. Unfortunately, when I visited, the Tama Train was not running as it was a Thursday, but there are plenty of other charming trains to enjoy.
The station itself is vibrant and welcoming, with a range of train options available. Even without the Tama Train, there’s still a lot to explore and enjoy. The other trains are equally delightful, featuring cute and creative designs that add to the fun atmosphere.

If you arrive by JR, head straight to Platform 9 where you will find the ticket booth for that railroad. If you arrive to the station by other means, buy 1-day train pass at the Bus Company ticket booth around the corner from the 7-Eleven on the East Entrance to the station. You then enter the JR platforms by showing that pass to the officer at the far end of the entrance gates. Then you can proceed to Platform 9.
If you arrive on the West side of the station by Airport Limousine Bus, you need to get to the East side via an underpass. There are elevators on either end if you don't want to use the stairs.
