I ventured south pushing on hoping to be greeted with an opportunity to stay in Rotorua somewhere. With mobile apps these days things are much better of course and hope is no longer associated with what some might say, " a dummy looking to be ripped off", but a reservation made good on lightening fast internet. Anyway, I took a chance on a sign that said Holiday Park. I was met at the reception by gracious gentleman. I was certain that the park was full. But the words that fell from his lips came like a melody, " yes, we have an unpowered site between those two cabins down on the left there." My hope had been realised. I know it should never pass for if I had seen that which I hoped for what would I have had to experience. This was hightened by the appreciation I had for the facilities. I remembered passing through this part of town when the trains were running years ago. These busy places were filled with happy campers back then too. Now the tracks lay overgrown, and I could see through the gaps in the wooden fence the rusty rails quietly resting on their sleepers, high grass in between. What is it if you should gain only that thing you desire. What good is there in hope, or in anything offered from the hand of fate if free movement of "the good" is diminished and we get only that which we cared for, or asked. We are fixed rigidly into that which is expected, in a matrix of our own making, helped along by popular opinion. I heard these words as I passed by an open door from a campervan. They dug deep into my conscious and buried themselves amongst the clutter. But I got it. Yeah I did. In a foreign accent the voice said, "Dog gone it man, get into the camping...

On arrival I was given a camp site that was for a camper. When I spoke with the office, the lady was apologetic and I requested a spot we could fit in, or to the family unit car park to be close with my family. The office accommodated my request, and we parked on the grass next to the unit. |The facilities are really run down. The fenced pool area’s garden is unkept, and the cobbles uneven and covered in weeds (I have disabilities and nearly tripped over and not accessible for a wheelchair user). |The toilets by the family unit don’t have showers, and the TV room/ air hockey room has multiple things out of order for the children and it’s unusable. |The playground is suitable for younger children under 7. But not for over that ages group. |We had dogs with our group which was pre-organised and approved, the one time they barked (as a trolley was being pulled on the gravel next) we were given a stern talking too, and advised they are a quiet park and they do not accept dogs to bark. |We lost the wifi code during the move in, and my 9yr old son and 10yr old niece went to the office to request a replacement, but the office staff advised “it wasn’t their problem” - the children returned upset and scared requesting to leave the holiday park. |The washer & dryer units are gold coin only, ensure you take these with you as the office hours are not before 8.30am. |Don’t be fooled by the word “family” in the name. |Definitely will not...
