Wanaka Helicopters — Local services in South Island

I booked a proposal package with Wanaka Helicopters and cannot recommend their service highly enough. Having been initially booked on a 12.30pm flight for two in an R-44, bad weather meant it was put back to 3pm but conditions improved significantly and after regular updates via email and phone, we were moved forward again to 1pm. I was passing off our flight as a birthday present and staff went along with the cover story perfectly, wishing my partner a happy birthday when we arrived. Nicky from the front of house team was a big help in my advance planning while pilot Dean gave us a flight to remember and took several excellent photos of us on top of Coromandel Peak which we'll treasure forever. He struck the right balance between keeping us safe, staying on top of our timings and also allowing us space to enjoy our special moment together with the right degree of privacy. It was my wife's 40th and we decided to push the boat out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so charted a heli to go somewhere special. My job is actually in aviation safety, so you can imagine I have my preferences and I did my research on all the operator options in the area. Happily, I settled on Wanaka Helicopters based on a number of factors - especially their equipment and reputation.

They were super helpful and helped me arrange the special day and maintain the surprise - even helping with a cake order. We took a flight to Lake Lochnager with Chris in a Squirrel and we loved every second! They set up a delicious champagne picnic for us on the site whilst the boys skimmed stones on the glacial lake. (They even did Nutella sangers for the boys :))

We flew with Wānaka helicopters as part of our wedding. We had photos at coromandel peak prior to the ceremony. The lady at reception was great, the helicopter and pilot good, the only downside is the helicopter was being fueled after we arrived, very casually. You pay a significant fee to land on the peak, get a small allocated time slot, and the flight is very expensive.This was I guess our treat for the day. As a result we had to rush through our photos on the peak, cut our time there short, then we were behind for the rest of the day. We didn’t get to enjoy the full experience due to Wanaka Helicopters not being ready in time. The whole thing was very stressful, and not really what we needed.
