Interesting history to it....In World War 1 German submarine attacked funchal harbour by firing torpedoes and sinking 2 ships....the people prayed for peace which came a year later and as a result they erected the statue. At the base of the statue is a rosary made from the chains from the ships...

Diesmal entschied ich mich für eine Wanderung zu oben benanntem Denkmal. Es entstand als Versprechen nach Erscheinen deutscher U-Boote vor Madeira im Jahre 1917. Sollte Madeira verschont bleiben, wollte man der Jungfrau zu Ehren ein Denkmal errichten. So geschah es dann auch. 1927 konnte die Einweihung stattfinden. Die Jungfrau selbst erschien nach einer Legende schon Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts etwas weiter unten. Der Weg von Monte führt daran vorbei. Meine Wanderung plante ich als Rundweg. Die gesamte Wanderung hat mir sehr gut gefallen und auch das Ziel/der Wendepunkt ist lohnend. Die Länge der Wanderung läßt sich leicht variieren. Wer Kilometer sparen will, fährt mit dem Bus hoch nach Monte und startet...

If you like to be in the mountains, this drive is great. Nothing around by the shrine except statue of Our Lady, which personally was worth the drive. Quiet, winding roads, surrounded by trees and beautiful views...
