Was really impressed with this the river kayaking tour I did a few days ago. I have kayaked in the ocean and lakes, but never whitewater. (As I expected, the water was low when I went in early August, so no scary rapids to be concerned about and a great place to experience whitewater for the first time). Anyway, I had a later reservation but showed up 5 hours early hoping I could go earlier and they were able to accommodate me (I was solo). You start by paying cash, then get a helmet and water boots and a wetsuit and life jacket - in my head I was like, is all this really necessary? And it was. Helmets are good if you fall out of the kayak and hit your head on a rock or brush against fallen trees or tree limbs. And the water was much colder than I expected so you l’ll be grateful for that wetsuit and boots. The instructor was awesome at introducing kayaking. While he was telling us the basics. He had us pick up the paddles and actually practice the strokes he was describing. I noticed that NO OTHER outfitter did this, which surprised me (the other outfitters talked about what to do and demonstrated but learners need to actually practice the strokes). Anyway. After we practiced the stories while standing in ankle deep water. We were invited to try to practice by going up river and gain some confidence before starting the real paddle. Then he taught us how to splash each other with paddles, which was just silly and fun. I noticed all the other outfitters had like 20 people. I’m not sure how many instructors but our group only had 5 people, so we got a lot of attention from the instructor. I thought this experience was just going to be a paddle through some small rapids, but this actually ended up being an introduction to kayaking class. Before each run we were given some trips and instruction and invited to practice. I felt like I learned a lot and want to do more whitewater when I go home. There were two occasions where our little group had to wait for another group to move forward and I thought our guide was super clever giving us kayaking related information and trivia to keep our minds busy during a brief wait. I feel like I lucked into finding the best tour operator and guide in the area!! I...
