I’m not sure what has happened to parkrun Bellville over the last couple of years but it now has become a race. I think what you should do is rather advertise as a race or a marathon. It is my understanding that this is meant to be a space of community and upliftment. Where families come together to enjoy a fun and safe space to walk or run. 90 percent of the population of this parkrun are walkers and runners who are there for the safety and enjoyment. It is outrageous that 5 to 10 percent of the population has been given the right to push people out the way, shout at other human beings and to take their unhealthy competitive nature out in a public space and event. The volunteers and marshals promote this unhealthy energy and attitude. I witness a father having to yank his child out of the harm of an oncoming so called “fast” runner. So is it really safe after all? You need to do better. This isn’t a race this isn’t a competition, those who want to do their personal bests need to do it separately from the Parkrun in their own private capacity. I am utterly disgusted, I use to enjoy this parkrun now I will do my due diligence and compare the different ones across Cape Town to find out why this parkrun is operating the way it is run. And maybe escalate this...
Read moreThe volunteers at this parkrun is what makes it one of the best - there is a great, encouraging, community spirit here. It's not the most scenic of the parkruns, but the paths are well maintained and suitable for runners/walkers with prams. Dogs are also allowed, but must be on a leash. The park itself is a little on the smaller side, so the route does loop a couple times to make up the 5km. Be sure to KEEP RIGHT to allow fast runners to pass on the left - some of those guys are super fast! And in good weather you can expect to be running along with +-1000 other people, so the paths do get a bit crammed in places, even though it's fairly wide all the way through on the usual route.
The park has restrooms, but you might want to bring your own toilet paper if you think you might need to go ;)
If you're a first timer to any parkrun, be sure to register (for free) on their website before you come and always bring your unique barcode (which you'll use at any of the different parkruns you might want to attend)....
