The Square Shopping Centre in Sunninghill presents itself as a convenient neighbourhood hub, but unfortunately, my recent experiences leave me questioning that claim. While it might have been one of the first in the area, it certainly feels like it's resting on its laurels. Firstly, the overall ambiance feels dated and uninspired. There's a distinct lack of vibrancy that you find in more modern shopping centres. It's functional, yes, but hardly a place you'd choose to linger or enjoy. The retail mix, while boasting some established names like Checkers, feels limited and doesn't offer much in the way of variety or unique offerings. If you're looking for anything beyond basic groceries and a quick meal, you'll likely be disappointed. Speaking of meals, the dining options are a mixed bag, and for some, problematic. While you'll find staples like Wimpy, Steers, Debonairs Pizza, and Fishaways, offering predictable fast-food convenience, the sit-down restaurant scene is where things get a bit more interesting, and not always in a good way. Mozambik is there for those craving Afro-Portuguese flavours, and there's Santi's Bar & Grill, which has been a long-standing fixture. It's Santi's, in particular, that often contributes to a less-than-serene atmosphere. While it aims to be a lively spot, the noise levels, especially on evenings and weekends, can spill out into the common areas, making it difficult to enjoy a quieter meal at a nearby establishment or even just navigate the centre without feeling overwhelmed by the din. It's not uncommon to hear loud music and boisterous conversations emanating from this area, which detracts significantly from the shopping experience for those not looking for a bar atmosphere. Despite claims of "newly installed electronic security and surveillance" and a "significant security and guard presence," I've personally felt a lingering sense of unease during my visits. While specific incidents might be rare, the overall impression isn't one of absolute peace of mind, especially when considering the evening activity around some of the restaurants and bars. One also has to wonder about the ongoing maintenance of the property; some areas appear a little tired and could do with a refresh. And while they proudly state that all parking, including undercover bays, is free, the layout can sometimes feel a bit haphazard, leading to unnecessary maneuvering and a general sense of congestion, especially during peak times. It's not a deal-breaker, but it certainly doesn't contribute to a stress-free shopping experience. In essence, The Square Shopping Centre in Sunninghill feels like a place that has simply existed for a long time, rather than evolving with the needs and expectations of a modern shopper. It's adequate for a quick grab-and-go, but if you're looking for an enjoyable, diverse, and truly comfortable shopping experience, especially one free from excessive noise, I'd recommend looking elsewhere in the...
Read moreThe car guards at the checkers parking area are a DISGRACE! They always allow non disabled people to park in the disability parking because they are totally clueless about disability. 1 guard even swore and bullied when complained about why they always do this and another red uniformed security guard said he allowed the person to park as the parking was full, when it was not eveb remotely full. I'd suggest all the current car guards be fired and employ some proper people who know how to do a simple job.
Edit 6 April 2022 - From this photo taken, it's obvious that after numerous complaints to both the centre management as well as the sunninghill community, the problem still persists with the same car guard culprit Pride Ndlovu - Only after I started to take this photo, did he decide to ask the non disabled vehicle to move. Management are clearly just as incompetent as their staff when they have zero respect for disability parking. Disgusting example for a suburb like...
Read moreReally well planned and layout of shops / restaurants / everyday service such as laundry and take away restaurants. Also includes a Caltex if I'm not mistaken. There's a Checkers Liquor store and a party shop. Wish more shopping centres could follow suit and make the centre more one stop shop than having random outlets thrown together with a gym and Wimpy, and other odds and ends makes no sense shops. This centre is the equivalent of a standard Mall and more. Really excellent time saving all in one place. Would recommend it to anyone. Keep in mind due to COVID the...
