2013년에 부산광역시 기념물 제61호로 지정되었다. 향교는 조선시대 국립지방교육기관으로 부(府), 목(牧), 군(郡), 현(縣)에 각각 한 개씩 설치하였다. 1392년(태조 1)에 국가의 교육진흥책에 따라 유현(儒賢)의 위패를 봉안하고 배향하며 지방민을 교육하려고 세웠으나 임진왜란 때 동래성 함락과 함께 불타 없어져 1605년(선조 38) 동래부사 홍준(洪遵)이 다시 지었다. 1705(숙종 31)년에 동래부 동쪽에 있던 관노산(官奴山) 밑으로 이전한 뒤 여러 차례 옮기면서 중건하였으나 1813년(순조 13) 동래부사 홍수만(洪秀晩)이 지금의 자리에 옮겨와 다시 세웠다.

지금의 건물은 유교의 성현(聖賢)을 모신 대성전, 학문을 강의하는 명륜당, 교생들이 기거하는 동재(東齋)·서재(西齋)를 비롯하여 반화루, 동무·서무, 내삼문, 외삼문 등이 있다. 중심 건물인 대성전과 명륜당은 정면 5칸, 측면 2칸의 겹처마 맞배지붕으로 되어 있다. 동재·서재는 정면 3칸, 측면 1칸의 홑처마 맞배지붕이고 반화루는 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸의 2층 문루(門樓)로 주심포양식의 겹처마 팔작지붕으로 되어 있다. 동무·서무는 정면 3칸, 측면 1칸의 겹처마 맞배지붕이며 내삼문은 정면 3칸, 측면 1칸의 홑처마 맞배지붕이고, 외삼문은 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸의 겹처마 맞배지붕으로 되어 있다.
