Eat, eat and eat. What's not to like?
There were quite a few floating markets to choose and so we decided to follow the trail of Someone Feed Phil S1:E1 when Phil was in Bangkok.
This market opens on Saturdays & Sundays and public holidays. So make sure you check with a local friend before planning your trip. It was indicated on Google Map that the Mother's Day weekend might affect opening times; and the first taxi driver we stopped told us the market was closed for Mother's Day, and suggested that to go to another market he knew that was more than an hour's drive. We stopped another taxi who was willing to drive us, and we got to Lad Mayom Market - the market was alive and kicking!
If you're taking the public transport : BTS or taxi 3-4 people take a taxi it costs about 200 Baht from Phra Kanong. Not great during rush hour - traffic can be a pain. BTS 59 Baht each from Phra Kanong to Bangwa and 90 Baht taxi to the market.
I've been to Chatuchat and I prefer this. You see the boat people selling fruits and vegetables, plants and food from their boats. There are tables and chairs for meals - mainly noodles 🍜 and were good. Lots of desserts from the other stalls that were not on the boat. There are 3 sections of areas dedicated to food stalls snd clothes. We're spoilt for choice.
There's the boat ride up and down the stream - nothing too exciting but worth a try.
A pleasant surprise - the river was bursting with patin fish 🐠 We spent quite a bit of time staring at the fishes feeding frenzy on bread.
What to wear? It's warm and humid - even warmer inside the market So wear something comfy - linen top with a pair of shorts! Bring lots of wet wipes and make sure you don't need to use...
Read moreWhat a great experience it was to hang out with the natives today at this lovely market! Visiting with my family from the US and couldn't leave without checking this off my list. It was super hot and humid but I stuck it out due to the charm of this market. There wasn't any touristy merchandise for sell because this is a spot that the locals enjoy, so don't expect that. Do expect fresh, authentic, local foods and beverages and a host of everyday use items. I was even very pleasantly delighted to find a vegan food vendor with delicious food made from local plants that I can't name (pic included).
My favorite experience was a 1-hr boat ride that boarded from market for 100 baht. We passed residences, other 'floating ' businesses, a few temples, and were even allowed 15 minutes off the boat to shop at 2 other floating markets.
Yet another 3 perks of Khlong Lad Mayom are that there's a coffee cafe with free wifi adjacent to the parking lot and the market; a plant farm with beautiful, potted greenery for sale; and the large, fresh fruit market (non-floating and covered) located a short walk across the street.
If you drive, you'll have to pay for parking and I'm not sure how much since I had a driver, but I'm sure it nominal. The are also many cabs circling the area for those who need a lift.
I was supposed to also visit the nearby Taling Chan Market but ended up here 4 hrs, including the boat ride. I changed my mind and went straight back to the house feeling fully inducted into the floating...
Read moreKhlong Lat Mayom Floating Market offers a genuine taste of local Thai life, though it does require a bit of effort to reach. Located outside the city center, the most convenient way to get there is by taking the BTS Skytrain to Bang Wa station and then hiring a car or taxi for the remaining distance.
Once you arrive, the market buzzes with activity. Boat tours are available for 100 baht (approximately US$2.90) per person, offering a pleasant way to explore the waterways. Be aware that if you're traveling solo or in a small group and don't want to wait for other passengers, you may need to pay for all the seats in the boat to depart immediately.
The market truly shines when it comes to food. The sheer variety is impressive, with stalls offering everything from grilled meats and flavorful soups to crispy fried dishes and tempting desserts. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also readily available for purchase, making it a great place to sample local produce.
Overall, Khlong Lat Mayom provides a vibrant and authentic market experience. A small note for visitors: please be mindful of the environment and dispose of your trash responsibly to help keep this wonderful market clean and enjoyable...
