For a moderately easy walk, how about Walney Island and nature reserve. From the A590 follow the signs for Walney. As you cross the bridge into Walney follow the road ahead to the Promenade. Park where you can on this road as soon as you catch sight of the sea. If you want a long walk - 5 to 7 hours, then do this as I did. Make your way to the path beside the sea and follow it to the left. You can walk all the way around this end of the island and eventually return on a circular route to where you left your car. Common sense and awareness is all you need. You may not have to ask anyone for directions, but if you do it won't be so difficult to follow directions given. If after several hours you get to a rusty-red hut with a White light House close by. Then caution. Don't drop on to the pebble beach. It's a protected area for sea lions and birds. To be in the right direction for your circular route, make your way to the back of the light house and from there follow the vehicle track for 45 mins to the visitor centre. You can get tea and biscuits there and be informed about the nature reserve. There are live CCTV cameras watching the sea lions. There is stuff for kids to do and educational it is too. From the reserve carry on along the road for another 2 hour walk towards where you left your car. It's tiring so backpack, sandwiches, flask, drinks etc. Go on a sure to be dry and warm day. Take a light fleece. Wear comfy walking shoes. I used trainers and was OK, no blisters. Check out the nature reserve on Google because you can park your car there if you want a...
Read moreIn these difficult times during this global Pandemic there's nothing better than to escape it all by returning back to nature, and in my opinion you'll be hard pushed to find anywhere better than the nature reserve on Walney Island. There's an abundance of wildlife including sea birds in the coastal grasslands and seals on the beaches surrounding sea, although the beaches are out of bounds to ensure the safety of the wildlife. The scenery on the island and surrounding area is stunning with the lighthouse and relics of WW2 as well as the views across to Peel Island. For a small donation of only £6 you have access to all this, the carpark, public toilets and visitor information centre. The staff are very friendly and helpful giving you information on the footpath routes and what to keep an eye open for...
