Ovingham Bridges are a pair of side-by-side vehicle and pedestrian bridges across the River Tyne. The Bridge re-opened to vehicles on 5 September 2016. The vehicle bridge is a single track for cars and light vans only. There is no footpath, pedestrians use the separate footbridge that runs alongside and with the same deck level. The centre piers are set wider, allowing the deck to spread and two vehicles can pass, (I'd like to see someone try). No traffic lights are installed. It was built in 1883 by the Ovingham Bridge Company and replaced the earlier ferry. It is a narrow single track bridge with a courtesy system in place whereby, you give way if someone is waiting to cross from the other end and the car in front of you is more than halfway across. This works well 90% of the time but, if you are travelling towards Ovingham, don't pull too far into the left while waiting to cross or the cars at the other end cannot see you.
