Far from "Best fish and chips in Oxford" upon arriving to see the shop with 4 other guests in we thought the wait couldn't be bad, how we were so wrong, we ordered and it took 3 attempts to get the order right, i witnessed one of the cooks/chefs battering a frozen solid fish and dropping it in the fryer and then continued to handle cooked food without washing his hands ,a gent in the back cooking on the flat grill was grilling burgers but handled the burgers with tongs then used the same pair to flip and use on the kebab turn table, its a clear case of cross contamination and at this point i started getting wary of the place, now we are 20 minutes in for a simple order of battered sausage and chips, there isn't any proper ordering system, listening to other orders come up, nearest experience i could describe it as was an auction, they didn't know what they were cooking for who and asking each person 2-3 times for there order again, its got to our turn, he was calling out for a sausage+fish and chips, no one else was coming forward so i guessed that it was meant for myself, i come forward and i say my order, he says "sorry i meant that", but no battered sausage.. now i have to wait for a further 10 minutes for a battered sausage, 30 minutes just to get battered sausage and chips, this place is beyond a joke, not to mention the clear breaches in food safety, ive been up and down like a YoYo all night on the toilet from eating and this place. Just had a very disappointing experience at Alices - disappointing bc I cannot normally fault the service. I arrived at the take away when no one else was in the take away - no fish was parked, no chicken was parked and no kebab was ready, which is fine. Wanted to order all three items - told it would take 15mins. Which seemed fine as none of the items were prepared. People arrived some five ten minutes after I ordered, nearly all of them left with some items I ordered. After 25 mins I enquired why I was still waiting, they explained I ordered kebab which takes time , how long does kebab take - about 8 mins was the reply - I’ve been waiting 25 mins and other later customers had long left ahead of me. The explanation without apology was pathetic and insulting. Got to the point when thy kept saying it is nearly ready , and still serving people ahead of me. I was so angry I said ‘now’ or I go , was told we are doing it now, only to serve someone who had only just ordered, so I left without my order. I consider myself to be a bit of a foodie, so hearing all the buzz about Alice's I thought I'd give it a try - I'm so glad that i did! I ordered a few things from the menu to get an overall sense of the standard of the food. So here's my review; the FISH simply stunning - just because its battered fish doesn't mean it has to forego all the moisture and this doesn't! The fish was so succulent and maintained that crispy, delicate, thin battered shell. The CHIPS: finally like the good old days, fat chips, fried to a slight golden brown with lashings of salt and vinegar (to your taste) delicious. I poured some curry sauce over the top off mine, soo good. The GRILLED CHICKEN WRAP, gone is the time when there wasn't a not too guilty pleasure from the chippy. The wrap was seriously good, the chicken was full of flavour, the shredded lettuce worked to balance the chicken and they added some chips in there and it really worked.
