GPS Ref: The Sands, Whalley, Lancs.
Abbey access along a straight driveway off The Sands, next to a primary school. Follow the driveway and pass through a large gatehouse, into a courtyard where there is free parking.
On one side of the courtyard is a cafe, highly recommended. On the opposite side is an imposing building showing Tudor & Victorian influences; this is now a Conference/Event Centre as well as a high class B&B.
To access the main abbey grounds nearby, firstly find the Reception area up some steps at the front of the imposing building. It's a £2 admission fee for adults, £1.50 for Seniors.
Ensure you get a copy of the Guide pamphlet to help negotiate the different areas and buildings in the abbey grounds.
Sadly, the abbey grounds and buildings are somewhat lacking in on-site information boards but maybe this is something the management are looking into.
If you are interested in medieval church buildings, it might be an advantage to check the Internet where there is a huge amount of fascinating information on the history of the abbey; believe me, it would make a great film!
For those of you who are just curious, it's a great place for photography or simply strolling, all within a beautiful and peaceful setting, with many picturesque views across the abbey grounds, within the ruins and along...

The gardens are beautiful - so well designed, planted and cared for, mostly by volunteers, I think. The ruins are really interesting with information boards where needed. Something I found particularly wonderful were the vistas we were continually treated to, through arches, tree lined avenues, doorways etc. Would not hesitate to recommend and look forward to visiting again soon. The gardens are open 9am - 5pm and cost £3 for adults -...
