What a fantastic place to eat the freshest and reasonably cheap seafood in the isle of Skye! I googled the best seafood in the isle and this was highly recommended. We began our holiday by having lunch there. It was so good that we want back and finished our holiday by having our last holiday meal there as well.
The menu changes per day depending on the catch but I can say that the lobster, mussels, king prawns, and oysters will be available. They have a menu item called āThe Platter which is Ā£50. It contains 4 or 5 different kinds of seafood plus one side. It also changes which type of seafood depending on the day. It can easily feed 3-4 people.
Our first day eating there, it was pretty busy and there was a queue at around 12:00. It wasnāt a long wait though. We had the 12 for Ā£12 oysters and āThe Platterā which had 2 dressed brown crab, 1kg mussels, 1/2 a lobster, king prawns, 1 crab claw and small scallops with two garlic bread.
Second day, absolutely no queue at 12:00. It picked up slowly afterwards. We went ala carte and had 1/2 lobster, 1kg mussels and of course the oysters, with a surprisingly generous side of onion rings for just £2.
Everything is freshly cooked! Thereās one long picnic table for seating options and thereās a also a standing table if you want a beautiful view of the sea while eating. Thereās NO TOILETS but the closest one is just down by the Talisker distillery. They have a sink for handwashing and tissues. Parking can fit about 8-9 cars. Thereās parking near Talisker and itās a 5-10 minute walk to the restaurant.
Get there early as they do run out of some of the menu items just after the lunch rush and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA place that could be so good getting it so wrong, big disappointment. My partner and I visited early this afternoon having recently been to a similar place in Oban (or so we hoped). When you walk in they have iPad type things on the wall to order on, no interaction or service whatsoever. We ordered an assortment - a dozen oysters, two of their cooked oysters, mussels (supposedly in wine?), soft shell crabs and soup. No sooner had we ordered than our fresh oysters were ready, literally pressed the button on the iPad and we were called (about 30 seconds later) so no way were they shucked to order. They oysters were ok, a little small and no where near as creamy as others weāve had. The cooked oysters were with salmon (for some reason) and chilli. Nothing to write home about. The soft shell crab, I thought were ok, although my partner wasnāt keen as the batter was rather ordinary and greasy. The soup - albeit only Ā£3 - was not worth the money. From the description I was expecting something like Cullen Skink, sadly it was salmony mush and not very pleasant. Finally, the worst, the mussels. I have been a chef for nearly 30 years and mussels are one of the easiest fast foods to cook to order. These were cooked in advance and had dried out. There was no sauce to mention. This place in beautiful Skye could be one of the islands best places but sadly it is really badly run by what I can only imagine are owners who care more about profits than their product. Very...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHeard and read some good things about this spot. So this time around on Skye we made sure to grab some lunch here.
The last 200m or so is a steeper one-lane road, but not problems here if you just look ahead a bit. The parking lot by the Oyster Shed has limited spaces. Again here...just don't rush - bring some time to either wait for a spot or to park further down and walk up. We got lucky and got a spot. Two RVs parked here too. Almost couldn't get in and out and did hold everybody up - so I wouldn't recommend bringing your RV up here.
Inside you order by tablet. It's quite a big space inside the shop. Once you got your food (outside) you can sit down right in front or head around the corner to the big table with some views. We were happy to sit out front though.
Ordered two kinds of cooked topped oysters (salmon/seaweed and spicy seaweed chutney), crab legs, a softshell crab and half-a-dozen of regular oysters. The fresh raw oysters were nice and of good quality. The cooked oysters were decent, maybe easier for oyster-beginners since the toppings cover the sea/oyster flavour. The softshell crab was really tasty - but also a bit pricey for our served size. The best item were the crab legs cluster. A good load of legs for little money. Very tasty!
All in all a good place to enjoy some seafood. Some items were great, others also very good - but not great. If we come back it would be for the...
