I usually enjoy visiting the Allegan Antique Market and appreciate the wide variety of vendors. However, during my most recent visit I was very disturbed to see Nazi memorabilia for sale among World War II relics. While I understand that antique markets often feature military history, the public sale of Nazi artifacts feels deeply inappropriate and offensive given what those symbols represent.
Other antique markets and even major online platforms have chosen not to allow this kind of material out of respect for Holocaust victims and their descendants. I believe Allegan could do the same by encouraging vendors to place such items in museums or educational institutions where they can be presented with historical context rather than offered for profit.
This market is an important community space, and I hope the organizers will consider adopting policies that reflect sensitivity and respect for all visitors. I would gladly return if I knew that this issue was...
Read moreAn antique lover's paradise. The vendors bring the rare and hard to find items to Allegan once a month. All people have to do is show up, pay to get in (entry fee is cheap), bring a bag, backpack, cart (no horses allowed) or other means of carrying their purchases, bring plenty of money to spend and totally enjoy themselves.
There are several water and pop vendors on the grounds and plenty of benches to sit on while you decide where to go next. A great place to get some exercise too. Just by walking around.
