I used to work in the Deli years ago and loved waiting on the senior citizens. I saw one those senior citizens a widowed lady on a small pension. I asked her had she been lately and she said yes but didn’t buy a plate just a piece of chicken. She said they are weighing the plates now and they two or three dollars more than they used to be and she just can’t afford it. Some seniors that’s their only substantial meal of the day. I could see maybe going up a dollar on a plate but why weigh them. Someone setting in an office no telling where that makes way more money than this lady does and has probably never ate a deli plate from that store decided this. The customers that shop at Bells don’t want fancy this and . I miss the old Bells the prices were cheaper and you didn’t have a manager running the place like he is dictator. You would think the way he acts he owns the store but my understanding is he does not. I’ve talked with several who have worked there that have worked under him tell me that it was the worst job experiences they have ever had. I go there walk around maybe buy a drink and leave. The owners need to understand that Bells shoppers there for the cheaper prices than Kroger or Publix’s. And some customers who usually shopped Public or Krogers were coming to Bells to shop now with the Prices higher Bells regular customers might’ve as well shop at Krogers or Publix now. At least you get quality Bogos and can buy one for half off. I saw a senior lady walking around one item in her cart she said I used to come in here and buy what ever I wanted now it’s just the bare necessities. Be nice if they had a senior citizen day. Enough said. Maybe the owners will step up and get to know...
Read moreThis local grocery is everything that a community food store should be. It provides the basic important fresh foods at truly reasonable prices for their loyal clientele, yet also has the prepared and snack foods we need when have to grab and go. The aisles are wide, with the most popular foods within arm's reach. Everything is well laid out. There will be no problems for someone in a wheel chair navigating either the store or the parking lot.
I've been here twenty years, and I've seen grocery stores come and go. But Bell's has pretty much remained timeless. Their aisles are always neat and clean. Store employees are very friendly. People come here specifically because it's Bell's.
If you need traditional southern recipe ingredients -- collards, black-eyed peas, and the best line up of reasonably priced locally produced meats and vegetables in Athens, you'll find them fresh and available here. They carry items other grocery stores no longer carry. Don't let the small-town charm fool you. This is a grocery store for real cooks who are feeding a family or a whole Sunday church meeting.
Anyone living in Athens for more than year will probably learn to make Bell's part of their normal grocery...
Read moreNow this store is B&T Food Fresh and at first I was wary of the change and losing the “localness” of Bell’s. I am surprised Google hasn’t updated their maps for the new name/ownership. Anyway, I am happy to say the store is still the same with great meats, many low prices and product offerings not available at Kroger/Publix and other stores I shop. The staff is the same awesome friendly crew. There are minor changes, such as the addition of B&T Food Fresh store brand, quality products! I adore their Hot Salsa which is superior to Pace brand, for example. Today I was pleased with the public bathroom upgrade! (Photo). I hope that you and other Athens value/quality shoppers will include and support this store with your regular shopping! Especially if you value smaller and more intimate local shopping experiences as I do. Please! #ParkClose #QuickInOut #regularCashiers #CaringStaff...
