My family originally came to Sugarcreek after finding an ad for baby cockatiels online. Unfortunately when we arrived, none were for sale as they apparently have 6+ month waiting lists and presell all the chicks. The shop is part store part "sanctuary" apparently, as 99% of the birds in the store are not for sale. They have a cool outdoor patio where you can take pictures and interact with some of the larger birds.. Pretty cool, so we went home (Columbus, 1 1/2 hours away) and discussed whether to just buy a bird at a local store or wait for the Breeding program at Sugarcreek. They have a nursery room where you can come visit and hold your chick for maximum bonding, it sounded so sweet. We decided to go with them and came back down a few weeks later to sign up. They had a fresh load of already sold chicks and people were filing in and out of the nursery which had the door open.
We asked a staff member if it was OK to go in after everyone was out, he was a 'volunteer'... I guess people just come work there to hang out..? Dunno but he said it was fine. We looked at the cuties and I sat in the chair I saw the previous people sitting in cuddling babies. I reached in and petted one of the cockatiel chicks as the shops owner came in. She had another family in tow, and immediately stopped everything she was doing, "was that YOUR bird you were touching?" "No we were just visiting." Says I. She grew angry and started barking her words at me.. "There's a SIGN on the door that says never open a cage and don't touch any bird that's not yours in the nursery. Now I have a family ready to see THEIR bird so I'm going to ask you to leave."
She wasn't clear about "leave" and I felt that too was intentional. Leave the nursery or leave the property? Either way it was a giant bucket of cold water thrown on everyone in the room. A sweet happy time was immediately tossed out the window. The guy in the other family made a face like 'what the heck' as everyone in the room cringed ferociously. I stumbled out an apology and we just left.
I mean.. Sorry. First the door was open and the way it opened any notifications on it were well out of sight. We had asked permission to enter and I.. Mistakenly I guess, thought they had that chair there specifically for people to sit and interact with the chicks and get them used to people. Again SORRY. She never gave any opportunity explain my incorrect assumption. She could have told us about their policies that only store personnel or pre-sale owners can touch the chicks without being so nasty. It left us all feeling guilty and angry all at the same time. We got to stew in that for the long drive back...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhere to begin? Sugarcreek Bird Farm is AMAZING. They deserve 10/5 stars! I had been on the hunt for a male lutino cockatiel for weeks, and to my luck these wonderful folks had one available (and that too, show quality with BLUE eyes! OMG!). I live in Detroit, MI, so I was considering getting the baby shipped over (which they are very experienced in), but eventually decided to drive. From when I put my deposit down in March to picking up my baby boy early May, they have been nothing but wonderful. I got weekly updates on my boy's progress, and they were always prompt and patient to answer any question I had (and trust me, I had a LOT). As a testament to their care, they even noticed that my boy was behaving a little differently and took him to the vet for a check-up- turns out he had a very small ear infection. I actually drove 500 miles roundtrip just to VISIT him for a few hours, and they gave me my own room and let me spend as much time with him as I wanted, checking in on me to make sure everything was OK. They gave him antibiotics everyday, and took a gram stain back to the vet to make sure he was cleared, all without passing the cost to me. Should he have needed more medication after I drove another 500 miles to pick him up, they were willing to mail me the meds! I also missed the sale from the day before due to scheduling, but they let me come in on Sunday anyways AND honored the sale prices. These guys go above and beyond when it comes to the care of their birds. Every associate knew my cockatiel by the name I gave him. If I ever need another cockatiel, I'm not going anywhere else-would be willing to do the 500 mile drive in a heartbeat. Lynn and Bernie, you rock! Mac and his family love you ;)
PS. My cockatiel is one of the sweetest birds I...
