It's an okay store, but it could easily be so much better. You definitely want to be there when the owner is there if you want to do anything besides browse around, and maybe pick up a few small things at sticker price. No offense to his son, great kid, but he cannot authorize any kind of haggling, and negotiation is a must at this place because some of the sticker prices and trade in offers are outlandish.
Don't get me wrong, I understand spending a few dollars more at a local business, however there are limits to that. Real example: In store, copy of Windwaker for GameCube, disc-only, no case: $65. On eBay (buy now, with FREE shipping): $20. Now eBay is eBay, and I'll gladly pay 5% or even 10% more to support a small business and to have it same day. But 200% more? Insanity. Now when the owner is there, he is willing to hear your case and is open to a deal, but it does make for a big issue when he isn't there.
Many of their old systems are fully functional, but in poor condition cosmetically given the asking amount, which makes them unappealing to anyone serious about collecting. It's almost sad because I bet if someone would just spend 30 minutes per console going over the outside plastic with a sponge, toothbrush, and some Windex, they would move off the shelves much quicker.
In general, it seems like a lot of the prices are simply guessed at. Organization, a proper computer at the counter, a better method of tracking inventory, and a little cleanup, would go a very long way.
Anyway, I don't want to go on anymore with negatives, because it is a cool little place, and retro game stores aren't exactly common around here. It's not bad, just slightly disappointing because one can easily see how with just a little more love, care, and direction, this place could go from "just okay" to...
Read moreWe came into the store looking for Gamecube controllers. The counter was being staffed by a 14 year old boy. He did a great job. The selection was mostly 3rd party controllers but they had 2 genuine nintendo brand controllers which we wanted to purchase. The first controller was a classic controller from the original line and it was graciously sold to me. The problem comes with the second controller. It was part of a box set that was supposed to include a controller, a copy of smash for Wii u and the adapter for the Wii u console. The box only included the controller and was priced at 80 dollars. My friend had been to the store about 6 weeks prior and saw that at that point the box included everything. We wanted to buy the controller but they did not have it priced. We spent an hour communication with the owner of the store through the 14 year old boy via text message. He kept saying he wanted to keep everything with the box. The only thing in the box was the controller. They didn't have the adapter on site anywhere and they had one copy of the game. If they had all three we were ready to purchase the whole thing for 80 dollars even though I already own 2 copies of the game, my friend owns his own and we each have an adapter. They didn't even have the entire box set and yet they were unable to provide us with a price or sell us the controller and as a result we wasted just under an hour of our time waiting for text replies and were unable to speak with the owner directly. We do not live in town. We drove to Brodhead from about 40 minutes away and were told we couldn't make the purchase we wanted to. I'm really...
Read moreI just read some of these reviews and his replies back he's no different than a scammer, price gouging. He gives you hardly anything for trades, prices are too high, wanted 35 for a game cube controller that was badly chewed on by an animal, and others with pads on joy sticks missing, and same price for one that's perfectly fine, or he has game cube games with case or without same price. The little bit he offers you should be considered robbery. And he is not the only game store in the area that was a lie. He said "I'm a small town business" ya, that screws over people "kids"...
