Saturday, June 21st. We are here at the Brownsville Tennis Center and as we barley entered the office to make an appointment for a court to play tennis, a lady, by the name of coach Yolie De Lo Santos, approached us and told us that there are no courts available and as we’re walking by the courts we see a lot of empty courts. When we asked her about it, she said that since there’s a tournament that we can’t use it. As a resident of Brownsville we should be able to use the courts even though there is a tournament going on. We as Brownsville residents, that pay taxes, should be able to use the courts even if there is some sort of tournament going on. This is the 3rd time I’ve come and they give me excuses that I can’t get in a court, it’s starting to feel like these courts and places are more exclusive rather than public. It feels like they are pushing away newer players that want to learn, people that want to come have fun at the courts, residents that want to play tennis non-competitively, etc. We should have the right to enter the courts and play tennis even if there is a tournament going on.
