My initial reaction a few years ago, when I first came here for a week's trial, was that the exercise bikes, a mix of recumbent and standard bikes, plus video and fan-resistance bikes, deserve 5 stars all by themselves. There are lots of elliptical machines, PLUS an extensive free weights section, PLUS led classes from Pilates to yoga to spinning, PLUS two different Circuits for self-paced workouts. Oh, don't forget the two saunas, one in the men's and one in the ladies' downstairs locker/lavatory rooms.
I was not a regular gym user before, but Spirit has led me to be one now!
A trivial note, but impressive: the place is spotlessly clean and airily large, so even at its busiest, it doesn't smell like a locker room!
Then there are the little touches that show someone was paying attention. Like two rows of coat-hooks under the stairs to the second-floor exercise spaces. There's plenty of headroom there -- unless you're on one of the adjacent stair-climbers. Or like a sitting area for cool-downs or eating some of the healthier snacks from the vending machine. (Right next to the weight scales, to encourage good snacking choices, too!)
Obviously, the motto under the sign on the wall -- Spirit! a wellness club -- is...
Read moreI had the worst experience at this gym. I went in for personal training services and the owner failed to show up twice after we had made appointments. No matter I thought, and I started with another trainer who was nice walked me through a routine. Cool, but when I went in to start said routine the lady running the front desk told me I wasn’t allowed to use the facilities my pt had told me to use. After explaining that my pt had told me to use the specific facilities she treated me as if I was lying and said “well, I’ll let you in THIS time, but you’re really not allowed to use those facilities with the plan you’re on”. She didn’t try to contact my trainer to verify or anything. Seriously poor communication on all the staff members parts. I was so embarrassed by the whole thing I left in tears and won’t be going to another gym for awhile because of it. If you’re looking for a place that is uplifting and motivating to get back into fitness this...
Read moreLOVE this fitness club. Laid back environment, friendly people, and fantastic instructors. Not your image oriented gym, but a down to earth place where both serious fitness enthusiasts and newbies can feel at home. There are classes specifically for the senior set, as well as advanced classes for the younger crowd. But don't be intimidated by the advanced level. Everyone works at their own pace and fitness level, with no pressure or judgment. The classes are fun and challenging, and the instructors are regularly changing things up to keep things fresh and new. There is a decent variety of cardio machines, a few of which are getting a bit old, hence the 4 star rating. The weight training equipment includes a good variety and number of machines and free weights. I wouldn't want to work out...
